Just a theory:
1. La Tech debacle, Auburn loss, Ga Tech debacle - team reeling, fans sick and tired of Crxxm and Co. - Byrne feeling heat from higher-up and lower level fans to make a change.
2. Week by week, losses mount, Byrne feeling increasing pressure from fans calling for a change of McCrxxmvy or Crxxm himself. Byrne begins seeking advice from other AD's around country about what to do. He needs the most quiet, non-aggressive and smart way out of the Crxxm regime...so how to do this?
3. Oct. 11, our record stands at 2-4 after just coming off a bye week and beating Vandy by a miracle 1 pt. win, 14-13. Yet, Byrne sees team reeling even more, no offensive changes being done, etc. So Byrne (along with most fans) anticipates our team/coaching staff getting much worse and headed for another 3-9 season. Also, Byrne anticipates the worst-case scenario of there being some racial backwash from NAACP & BCA of firing/removal of Crxxm. Again, he needs the easiet way out to quiet all parties and have MSU coming out in the clear...
4. ENTER JSU - Oct. 13, Byrne schedules JSU as first game for 2009. Most normal thinking peeps say a big: "WTF?!" Then, it sounds totally out his arse and coming way out from left field. In hindsight, I can see why he did it: To counter-act/defend any comments painting MSU's removal of Crxxm as somehow a racial issue. (by the way I do not buy into this, just saying Byrne anticipated a worst-case scenario which never happening...well...so far).
Byrne's argument: So we're racist for getting rid of Croom? FALSE! We're the first SEC school to hire an African-American head coach. Now, we're the first MS school (or maybe first SEC as well not sure on that one?) to schedule a SWAC school. How would you ever perceive us as being racist since we will make history next year by playing JSU and made history back in 2003 by hiring Crxxm?
Home run, ball game & game over - all racial heat or racial comments are dead in the water and Byrne/MSU come out smelling like a rose. To me, JSU is not a WTF anymore...now it makes complete sense if you are a new AD. Byrne is definitely making some savvy moves in his early tenure.
go ahead & flame away...</p>
