What I can't understand is where all the savings is really coming from. You still need internet to stream TV right? That's atleast $50 a month. I have Comcast for both internet and cable and it's only $130 a month. If I remove the cable but started adding all these other streaming subscriptions wouldn't I be right back to where I started? Plus the internet cost will probably go up because it's not bundled.

My internet is around $60 a month and that includes a land line to my house (wife wanted it for 911 for the kids). I have Hulu and Netflix and Amazon Prime. I already had Netflix and Amazon Prime before cutting the cord. We paid $185 for cable, internet, and land line. The antennae I built cost $10 because most of it was made from scrap items in my garage.

As I said before, I don't watch nearly as much TV but I easily save $1,200 a year. I've got plenty of other things to do anyway and don't miss it except a few weekends a year in the fall and the opening weekend of March Madness. It gives me an excuse to go to a sports bar.

I use Roku for PlayStation Vue, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and WatchESPN (accessed with PS Vue login). PS Vue lets you DVR and gives you access to On Demand content for lots of channels.
Antenna in the attic for all local channels.

I'm currently paying $85/month for internet through comcast. with it is a basic cable package and HBO. I use my apple tv to watch all ESPN programming. it also has HBO GO/Now, hulu, and netflix. i pay for those services.

And for some reason my basic cable package has sec network, espnu, nfl network, and mlb network.

to watch games of MSU that are on ESPN or ESPN2, i just log in with my brother's dish account. i do it to avoid paying an extra $50/month just to get a cable package that offers those channels. if they ever find a way to stop it, then i'll just not watch at home.

I have the Platinum cable/internet package. Costs $1,000 per month, but I get every channel known to man in ultra-HD. **

I have the Double Platinum package, $1,200/month, every channel known to man, woman and Mexican. Can't understand any of the 750 Mexican channels but they are fun to watch anyway.

I feel the need to upgrade. Got to keep my cable package up to the same high standards as dawgstudent's big-screen TV collection. **

Agreed. The only way I can see saving significant money is if you borrow mawmaw's account logins.

Yeah that's what I've gotten out this whole conversation.

What are all you cord cutters going to do when WatchESPN and all the other apps only allow 1 device to be logged in at a time like some already do (NFL Sunday Ticket)??? That seems like the simplest fix to stem the trend.

If they curtail the use of cable logins by multiple people, won't people have to subscribe and pay for the apps a la carte? And if you get 10 apps it'll be the same price as cable with a lot less channels??? I just see that being the future?

Thanks for the input, this has been helpful. Except, I don't think I can build my own antenna and I don't know what a Hulu or Roku is. Most of my family and friends have already cut the cord and want be going back so it sounds like I'm missing out.

I think I will start by purchasing an antenna and go from there. I should probably just cut the tv off completely because I would rather be outside anyway.

Sounds to me like you might be "mammaw & them" in this scenario and mstglfr and the rest of your family are benefitting from your cable logins to be able to watch anything at all.

Dawgstudent why don't you just share your cable/satellite account login credentials with the entire board in exchange for a $50 yearly donation to the pack?

Really? Pretty sure I mentioned my info used by others too. Its a give and take.
Screen entertainment is moving away(and already has) from a physical street address.

If I had kids in college, I would still figure they will be on my entertainment accounts even if they live in another part of the state or out of state.

Much like music purchasing has evolved, TV will need to continue to evolve. And until then, the current environment is quite similar to the years where Napster dominated.

If this happens, it would certainly stop a lot of the Napster-style sharing thats currently happening.

With that said...

Why is a house with 5 TVs OK to have ESPN family of networks on all 5, but only 1 mobile screen can access watchESPN at a time? That would be the biggest issue- its ESPN on the go and it would no longer be on the go. It would allow only 1 of 5 people to be on the go and the others would lose out or have to watch from home.

Building the antenna was easy. Didn't take 30 minutes. 2x4, cardboard, aluminum foil, washers, screws, coat hangers, and a $7 purchase of a transformer. Then hook it into your splitter in the attic and it will go to the entire house if set up that way. Point it in the right direction and enjoy 'MERICA for free.

So you steal your content?

Services aren't cracking down on account sharing to grow their active user metrics, but it's a violation of the Terms of Service. People like you are why Netflix has tiered subscriptions and why companies are going to enact strict session control protocols in the future.

But congrats on the free TV shows.

I'm actually in my 30's, just don't care enough about TV to research all these different streaming options and decide what I want to use. Really just looking at saving some money but still be able to watch live games and a few shows when I want to. It probably wouldn't bother me much if I didn't have tv at all but my wife and kids would be pissed.

I type in a popular topic, like today "NFL draft". Then all you do is click on the " Related Searches" that they suggest in the right margin quick as you can, don't even wait for them to finish loading and don't have to even read the related article. It takes me just over 5 minutes a day, then I go back to Google

They wouldn't have to restrict to one device. They could just check locations of use and compare with service address. If you constantly use watch espn at a different address then you get blacklisted. That would of course cause another set of problems but it would be better than just being able to stream on only one device.

Most if not all people have internet before they cut the cord so that cost is already there with you so I don't consider that an addition. I already had Netflix too so that wasn't an additional cost for me either when i dumped cable. My Comcast internet didn't go up when I cancelled. I went in and gave them all the boxes I had and told them to drop the cable and keep internet like it was and that's what they did. Im saving about $110/mo and haven't missed anything

Then I'll pay $25/mo for Sling to get the sports package and 20 channels, still way less than the $120 I was paying for channels like Hallmark, Fake Housewives of Divorceville, The Jilted Women's Channel, etc

I bet 10 people have my login credentials that I have knowingly given out. So that means at least 50 people use it.

👍 Need a like button.

People using their parents logins in order to not pay for cable rustles my jimmies for some reason. Bunch of poors, probably still on their parents cell phone and car insurance plans too

Agree. I have a Fire box in my living room. Good guide for PS Vue and Amazon Prime video. Plus the Alexa voice feature is kind of nice with the remote. I have an older Roku in the bedroom but really don't use it much. When I go to bed most stuff I watch is via antenna.

for those of you that don't have the time or the blueprints to build an antenna you can buy one on amazon that looks like a mouse pad for 15 bucks and have it delivered to your door... for an extra 20 you can have it amplified. If you are really smart you can train your dog to install it and then bring you a beer

I pay for Netflix's premium plan which allows 4 screens at the same time. It doesnt matter where those screens are located and isnt tied to a physical street address. I use it on my cell data. My kids can use it on my in-law's wifi 350miles away.

Netflix tiered subscriptions because you get more screens at once the more you pay and you get better video quality too. Its really easy to see why they have tiered subscriptions by just looking at the differences for the 3 tiers.
Furthermore, Netflix said in the summer of '16 that they know passwords are shared and dont see it as an issue.

Time to remove that argument from your quiver.

That wouldnt be a good idea because the whole point of watchespn and all the other mobile streaming apps is for people to not be tied to their physical address. so if you get blacklisted due to using it too often away from your address...whats the point in having it?

Hastings said it was "a positive thing"

And again, I'll reiterate...they don't care right now because they need DAU metrics to continue to rise for growth.

"To illustrate this example, he [CEO Reed Hastings] spoke of how a parent may share their login with their child. And when that child grows up, they will usually subscribe to Netflix, too."

“As kids move on in their life, they like to have control of their life, and as they have an income, we see them separately subscribe,”

Is that how you would describe your situation? I doubt it. Same for your WatchESPN set up.

The Netflix CEO sees you as a child who gets free TV. But again, congrats on the free TV.

Buy an Amazon Fire Stick. spend 20 minutes watching a video on youtube on how to download Kodi then you can watch anything you could possibly think of for free. all you would be paying for monthly is internet.

This is my question too, so is everyone that has cut the cord having to basically use their parents or friends (who still have to have cable) logins and passwords? Can you subscribe and pay for the WatchESPN app and/or the HBOGo app?

I would just think that loophole will be closed at some point, and they'll only allow WatchESPN to be logged in on 3 devices or so. And then what will cord cutters do when they can't use mommy and diddy's password anymore?

Also, with a Firestick or Roku, do channels like FoxNews, CNN, TNT, etc have free apps? Or do you have to have passwords for those too from those who subscribe to cable?

Not I.

BTW, I expect more services to employ the PlayStation Vue model, which I subscribe to. It will only let you log in on one ISP.

I've seen a few people mention Kodi on here. Be very careful if you do install and use Kodi. Kodi and it's plugins live in the legal and moral gray area. I know a lot of people at work who use it and they setup a VPN to mask their identity while they use Kodi.

This article talks about the legal issues with Kodi. Just use at your own risk and understand there might be consequences.
