I started this on BDJ, but was requested to also bring it to the Pack..so here goes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I saw this on another ESPN-related forum, and thought It was a good way of passing the summer days...counting down to the season opener, and letting people learn about the players on the team.

First off, Gotta Catch up as..its now 91 days till kickoff
So we missed out on 9 Numbers.. but they deserve their fair share too.

As the player info hasnt been updated with stats for last year, I will do that myself for each player as I post them.
If you have any thoughts about a player, or know something about them..on their day
chime in..

Lets keep this on topic though as much as possible.

THE BDJ Analysis
Of State's deep list of defensive tackles and ends, no other made more progress, physically, in the offseason than Ferguson. Ferguson played defensive end last year at 220 pounds (and that might be a stretch) but enters spring practice at 245 pounds. Ferguson's work ethic speaks for itself and his quickness and new-found weight gain puts the rising sophomore in a good spot to earn a starting role at one of the end slots. Although overmatched at times last year, it's hard to put a price on the SEC experience he gained as a true freshman.

Highly recruited defensive lineman who helped his Bastrop High School team to a pair of state titles.

Spring 2009: Does not appear on the Post-Spring 2-Deep Depth Chart.

2008: Played in all 12 games, but drew no starts. Totaled 8 tackles (5 solo, 3 assists) for the season

2007:
Played in 11 of a possible 13 games during his true freshman season at Mississippi State (includes the bowl game) ... Only missed seeing game action in back-to-back games at mid-season vs. UAB and Tennessee due to injury ... Earned his first collegiate start, the only one of his initial season on campus, in Mississippi State's Week 4 win over Gardner-Webb ... Registered one tackle each in Week 2 vs. Tulane and at Arkansas in the next-to-last game of the regular season ... HIGH SCHOOL:
Listed as the No. 48 defensive tackle prospect in the country by recruiting web site Rivals.com ... That site also ranked him as the No. 27 prospect, regardless of position, in the state of Louisiana ... Made 76 total tackles, with 10 tackles for loss, six of which were quarterback sacks, during that junior campaign ... Also forced three fumbles ... Other top scholarship offers: Alabama, Arkansas, and Colorado.

PERSONAL:
Born LaMarcus Jerome Williams, 2-3-89, in Bastrop, La. ... Son of Mr. Michael Frazier and Ms. Debra Williams Frazier ... Majoring in management.

http://www.mstateathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=90891&SPID=10997&DB_OEM_ID=16800&ATCLID=1087907&Q_SEASON=2008

THE BDJ Analysis
As a freshman (2007), Williams found his way on the field, not as easy task for true freshmen in the SEC. However, he dropped to 260 pounds by the end of the 2008 season. Now up to 270 pounds, Williams' experience and talent alone should help the Bulldogs up front. Williams may have the best footwork among all the defensive linemen and with extra muscle added, could find his way into a starting role in 2009.

According to the Spring Roster there is no 97. So Instead we will look back at the Year 1997....

1997 was the beginning of a special time around Starkville, MS for the football team. Coming off back-to-back losing seasons, Jackie Sherill and the Mississippi State Bulldogs took charge and lead the Bulldogs to a 7-4 season, including road wins over top 20 ranked Auburn and Alabama in consecutive weekends. In the end though, The Bulldogs were left out of the Bowl picture that season.

* High School/Other College: West Brook HS

Spring 2009: Does not appear on the Post-Spring 2-Deep Depth Chart.

HIGH SCHOOL:

Other top scholarship offers: Texas, Arkansas, Baylor and Boise State ... Committed to MSU in January 2008.

PERSONAL:
Born Shane A. McCardell, 1-16-90 ... Son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel McCardell.

http://www.mstateathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=90891&SPID=10997&DB_OEM_ID=16800&ATCLID=1507259&Q_SEASON=2008

THE BDJ Analysis
At the end of the 2008 campaign, the former MSU coaching staff hinted that McCardell might move to outside linebacker. While that remains to be seen, what is obvious is McCardell's offseason work. McCardell added some 20 or so pounds and now plays at 240 pounds. McCardell will have ample opportunities in the spring, as far as the coaches determining his best position on the defensive side. And his speed - among the best of the ends - gives him that flexibility.

THE BDJ Analysis
When healthy, the 315-pound Love clogs up the middle and has proven to be a solid run-stopper. But Love has battled toe injuries the past two seasons and it limited the rising senior to just 13 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in 2008. A healthy Love gives MSU a solid player in the middle of the line and his leadership and SEC experience are a welcomed sight.

According to the Spring Roster there is no 94. So Instead we will look back at the Year 1994....and a specific game.

The date was October 22nd, and it was Homecoming on the campus of Mississippi State University. Jackie Sherrill in his 4th season had the Bulldogs off to a 4-2 record entering the game. The opponent of the day was Tulane University. 554 Total offensive yards later, records were broken and many set that stand today. MSU defeated Tulane 66-22. Derrick Taite passed for 466 yards on 21 of 30 attempts with 4 TD.
Eric Moulds combined for 238 of those yards with 160 on receptions and 78 on returns.

The Bulldogs would go on to finish the season 8-4, with a heart-breaking lose to NC-State in the Peach Bowl.

THE BDJ Analysis
For the past two years, Cooper has received his share of snaps (especially late in 2008) albeit in a reserve role. But that could change with a solid spring showing. Cooper got off on the right foot this offseason by earning membership to The Champions Club. Cooper's quickness and strength off the edge puts him in good position to earn a starting role for 2009, and definitely in the rotation at defensive end.

The BDJ Analysis
At the end of the 2008 campaign, Burns was the most effective Bulldog linemen and earned four starts. And that was a solid boost from a guy that battled back from a pair of injury-plagued seasons. Due to his setbacks, Burns earned an extra year of eligibility and that bodes very well for the defensive line. Now up to 275 pounds, Burns can hold his own up front now that his shoulder problems are in the past. Burns' quickness could also land him snaps at defensive end, where he started his college career.

The BDJ Analysis
After serving a one-year suspension, Prince is a nice addition to the 2009 roster of defensive linemen. Two years ago, Prince played his way into the rotation and has already proven he wants to make the most of his second chance. In the offseason, Prince made The Champions Club list and at 265 pounds, Prince should find his way into the tackles' rotation, if not a starting role.

....it was Croom's first call-in show, before his first game, the one against Tulane where everybody got a free shirt, and 19.83% of the crowd that got free shirts decided to only ever wear that shirt again.

Anyway, it was time for Bulldog Trivia, and Dr. Jack asks the question: "What Bulldog QB set a school record for passing yards in a game with 466 yards against Tulane in 1994?"

Caller #1: (with deep, deep sincerity) "Jack, I believe that's going to be JOHNNN BONNNND."

Croom: "I've only been here nine months, and I know THAT'S not the answer."
