Covid shot... Experience

I'm eligible starting next week. My wife missed the cutoff age by 9 months. She'll get it in the next round. I'm eager to get the shot(s), regardless of brand. So far....

* My in-laws (late 70's) got the Mo-Durna shots with nothing but a sore arm.

* Niece mid (mid 40s school teacher) got the Pfizer (the P is silent). Light headache and fatigue after 2nd shot.

* Niece (mid 30's healthcare worker) got Mo-Durna with fatigue after the 2nd shot.

* Daughter (mid 30's healthcare worker) got Mo-Durna with bad headache, light fever and fatigue for 1 day after the 2nd shot.

* Daughter in-law (late 30's health care worker) got Mo-Durna with fatigue and headache after the 2nd shot.

* Multiple older neighbors here have gotten both Mo-Durna and Pfizer (the P is silent) with no side effects except a sore arm.

Moderna 1. Sore arm maybe 3 days. No other symptoms. Wife had mild sore throat and achy joints during first nite, nothing after that, other than the sore arm.

Shot 2 on 3/25

Early data of Pfizer has indicated that it loses virtually no efficacy against Brazil and UK variants.......meaning that although numbers haven't been released they feel that it's still well into the 90's as far as percentages. Only the South African variant has been shown to lower the efficacy......to "robust but significantly lower" numbers.

Soooo, it is likely that the overall efficacy of the Pfizer/Moderna will drop as it gets exposed to variants........but as of right now, early data indicates that it won't drop nearly as much as 60-70%.



But, y'all are getting caught up in weeds here. Flu shots are regularly in the 50-60% range. This does NOT mean that they aren't effective and you should avoid them. Quite the opposite. Nor does it mean that the other vaccines are slam dunks better.....because they are not.

J&J offers a few things that vary from the others.

1. Availability - This is the #1 thing. It can be produced quicker and distributed much easier. No refrigeration, etc. If the J&J is the one that you have access to quicker and easier, then you should probably go this route.

2. Older method - Pfizer and Moderna are the first to use the RNA method. Such a method has the ability to yield much, much higher efficacy (as it tends to instruct rather than arm the body) and could parlay into other illnesses. Some are even saying that using this method "could" irradicate certain forms of cancer within the next 5-10 yrs. However, being a new method there is the unknown of the future.....side effects, duration, etc... The J&J is likely to be much more predictable in this regard.

3. Some feel that the morality of using fetal tissue is an issue. The J&J does, the others do not.

4. Single dose - This was my entire reason for posting in the first place. As of right now it's a benefit.....but it might change. J&J is running tests to see if they need a booster.

Once again, I never once said that anyone should avoid J&J.........nor did I recommend anyone get one manufacturer vs another. The only thing I said was in response to the OP saying that the J&J is a one shot vaccine. As of right now it is a single shot.......but because they aren't as effective as the other ones they are looking into providing a secondary booster.

Again, you make the error in comparing the studies by saying definitely that they "aren't as effective as the other ones".

That is not proven in a controlled environment comparing all three shots. Is it safe to assume that perhaps moderna and pfizer are "more effective" sure. But to say it definitely as you are is an error and is wrong.

One could just as easily argue that JNJ is more proven against the South African and other variants because it showed effectiveness against them.

In fact, there is scientific evidence emerging that the JNJ might actually be more effective against those variants. Not proven yet in controlled studies, but evidence.

I didn't. But you seem fixated on thinking that I did. We're going around in circles. The only thing I said was that J&J might have to go to 2 injections.......and you went off to left field again and again.


And I never directly compared studies.....ever. It is probably unlikely that research will be done among all manufacturers at the same time.....so, you have to use logic and general collected data to help form assumptions. So, yes, one should absolutely use caution when comparing studies directly.....but it doesn't mean you can gather information or have a logical discussion on them.

For example, J&J (depending on sources) has an overall efficacy of around 66-72% among all variants. In order for them to get to around 60-70% they would have to do stellar in 1-2 variants and poor in others........or just generally good for all variants.

For Pfizer, we know that the they had an efficacy in the mid-90's for the original variant. And early data (although no actual numbers have been released) is indicating that the high efficacy hasn't changed much at all for the UK and Brazil variants. Soooo, logically it would have to tank the South African variant in order to get to an overall variant in the 60's-70's. But again in the link that I provided (and then you provided again), they are reporting "robust but lessened" efficacy for the South African variant....so, it doesn't sound like tanking.


So, it's not a stretch to make the assumption that Pfizer are significantly better in efficacy. The word "significant" when not actually comparing hard data takes on a wide array of variability. Even if the overall efficacy of Pfizer/Moderna drop to 70-80% that's still a fairly significant sum over J&J's reported 66-72%.

But in the end, the exact amount DOESN'T MATTER which is why I never dove into specifics. All are very effective and should be used to quell the pandemic. And whether or not one is more effective than the other is irrelevant. All must be used...and used quickly. The quicker the pandemic can be resolved the less of a chance other variants will pop up.


Again, the only thing that I said was that J&J might go to 2 injections.








One hope is that the efficacy of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine could rise if it is given as a two-dose regimen. Johnson & Johnson is running another large study, enrolling 30,000 patients, testing two doses of the vaccine given 57 days apart. However, Stoffels said, waiting that long between doses will slow results. He expects results of the two-dose study to read out in the summer or fall.

I have yet to receive my shot because I'm not eligible yet (and really in no hurry)

But my 72 year old dad got both shots with no adverse effects. Same with my 68 year old mom. And my 95 and 90 year old grandmas also had no adverse effects. All got Pfizer.

I'm wondering if we older folks aren't having as big a reaction since our bodies have seen more viruses & vaccines and thus have some "collateral" immunity to the vaccine.

Very sore arm for 3 days. Had mild flu-like symptoms of fatigue and body aches. No fever. Treat it like your sick, hydrate, chicken noodle soup, 7-UP and Tylenol.

Oddly the older family member was rather fine, maybe I'm a puss.

Nah. I prefer Microsoft Windows as far as computers go, but I just bought a MacBook, so I’ll wait for the Apple Vaccine. Plus, Steve Jobs is dead, so he won’t be able to control me as much.

I got the first moderna shot a week ago yesterday. Arm was sore for a few days and I’ve been sick as a dog ever since. Not sure if it’s just coincidence or vaccine related. Have had bad allergy symptoms, headaches, chest congestion, and now the past two days have felt like I have food poisoning. Can’t wait for the second dose!

First shot Moderns Tuesday. Feeling sick Wednesday and went to Doctor. Covid rapid test positive, other test came back negative but still have to quarantine 10 days. Arm was sore for 3 days.

I have a coworker that previously had covid-19 that said his first shot made him feel like he had covid again for the first 36 hours or so.

Moderna on Thursday afternoon. Zero side effects except sore upper arm for about 24 hrs.

I haven't heard that the vaccine contains baby parts, but I was told that it contained nano-machines that would allow China to control us like robots. And at this point I don't even know how many times that I've been told that the vaccination's the Mark of the Beast. Good grief. XD

yeah. They’re using fetal cell lines in parts of the development but they aren’t in the vaccines and they aren’t from aborted fetuses.

Me, my wife, and 4 other people we know all got shot 1 of Pfizer yesterday.

None of us have any symptoms but our arms are sore.

We get round 2 on April 2.

I'm curious, do y'all that had symptoms normally have symptoms after a flu vaccine?

I rarely get a flu vaccine but when I did I never got symptoms.

I got Pfizer #1 yesterday too. It was as painless a shot as I've heard had but today was arm is really sore too. No other symptoms other than I slept like a baby last night.

I usually don't sick after a flu shot but will feel sort of off for a day or so.

Is it possible you contracted the covid about the same time as the shot? Have you had a test?
