He just said that the NFL has suggested that someone find a spot for Michael Sam. Said they're not making anyone do anything and they're certainly not rewarding anyone for taking him. Thought it was interesting the league cares about a player for social reasons.

On a side note, the Cowboys are the only team in the NFL with the collectively bargained right to distribute their own merchandise. Even if the Rams kept Sam and his jersey continued to increase in popularity, any profit would simply be added to the league's revenue pool, to be equally divided among its teams. Conversely, the Cowboys can directly profit from him.

That's interesting. Never knew that. Makes Sam a low risk, possible high reward player to take.

Yes. Very interesting. Wonder how all those people who bought Michael Sam St. Louis jerseys feel now? I guess they'll just go by a Cowboys #46 jersey now. Then when the Cowboys activate him and he has to wear a different number, they'll go out and buy a Cowboys #whatever jersey. Brilliant move by Jerry Jones.

Because it's a business. Michael Sam gets gays interested in football if some weren't already. Hell, they had draft parties at gay bars.

On a related note, does anyone else have a hard time believing that Sam's jersey was really a best seller? I get the significance of his being the first openly gay player but I just don't believed that thousands of Americans went out and bought a $100 NFL jersey because of it.

My guess is that jersey sales for players already in the league are pretty low in the spring and early summer and peak in late summer and fall and therefore most sales in spring and early summer probably come from rookies just drafted.

Funny how the goalposts have moved on this. A few weeks ago the homophobic conspiracy theorists were adamant that there was no chance the Rams would cut Sam. The liberals would never allow it. Now we're getting more at the truth. The NFL wants to be seen as more progressive but is not going to force any team's hand.

Let's not act like though Sam didn't have a good preseason but if there is one team that loves a media circus - it's the Cowboys.

Speaking of which, Redskins merchandise sales are down 35% since this controversy heated up. If this becomes a long-term trend, I think Goodell is going to start putting some pressure on the Redskins to change their name. I still think it's a question of when, not if, the name is changed.

I thought the Rams were going to make sure he at least got a year on the 53 man roster, but apparently, the NFL wasn't pushing that.

Like I was expecting though, they clearly were concerned about the PR side, and they wanted to make sure he landed somewhere.

The guy likely just isn't good enough, gay stuff aside, but the NFL wants to at least make the appearance that he's getting his shot.

Jerry Jones is just the guy to do this as well. He loves a circus. It's part of the reason the Cowboys go 8-8 every year despite having what I consider a plus QB in the NFL.

A lot of reasonable people thought that and weren't wrong by doing so. It's a complex story.
