Bogan will not be fielding a varsity team this yearGood news possibly for Rock Island to get their 9th game.Someone has dropped football that was to play in the CPS Inner City 2 Conference.I just seen a bunch of teams(Carver,Kennedy,Fenger, others have openings)
As "recently" as 2009, Bogan went 9-0 averaging 41.3 ppg while giving up 6.3 ppg. Marian Catholic knocked the Bengals out of the playoffs in the 1st round 49-6 before losing to St. Rita 34-14 in Round 2.Bogan will not be fielding a varsity team this year
Those teams were during the tenure of Bob Jurka, head coach of 22 years before health reasons caused him to resign in 1997, one year before his demise at the age of 56. His Bengals had 13 state playoff appearances, 11 conference titles and 3 city championships. Former Hillcrest player, Sam Jones, was the head man at Bogan at the time of their 9-0 regular season in 2009.Bogan had some great teams in the 80's & 90's.Gave Catholic & Non CPS schools fits.Even beat Reavis a time or 2.I recall 3 or 4 years in a row they played St.Laurence in round 1.Us in Burbank and many in Chicago considered Bogan a Suburban like school. They also I think made it to the Prep Bowl one or 2 years after many near misses and lost both times
Even when it the area was "beautiful", Bogan had to muddle through because of leakage to the CCL. This was prime Viking territory back in the 80s. Bogan lineman were midweight wrestlers playing football, and leveraged being a safe neighborhood (lots of fights inside the school from being split 4 ways demographically) into getting skill guys from over East. When they lost Jurka it hurt but also that once nice beautiful area went to the dogs pretty bad
Solorio is same charter network and less bus rides. Don't forget Urban Prep and Perspectives (charter houses at old Calumet campus) also taking guys that would have been Bogan players. Could also be the effect of the St. Laurence resurgence under Blackmon.Did all of their potential talent transfer to Phillips?
