Critiquing Dak's performance

I'm going to try an attempt to give a laymen's critique of Dak and his performance. Feel free to add comments, agree, give a dissenting opinion, whatever you feel. These are the things I noticed:

- Overall, it's obvious to everyone in the stadium and beyond that Dak fits the offense Mullen wants to run much better than Russell. I will say, I absolutely HATE it for Russell. The kid is a hard worker and an all around good guy. He also has talent. The biggest issue to me is he needed to have been developed in a pro-style, drop back, timing pattern type offense (see Tom Brady and Kurt Warner for examples of this offense).

- Dak stood in the face of pressure well. He also has a much better feel for the pocket. He knew when to step up, he knew when to bail out, and he felt those lanes well. At full potential, sacking him will be the equivalent of Atlanta's lineup getting a hit off Cliff Lee. I was impressed with that aspect.

- Moving the quarterback is an essential element to this offense. There will be many times we have to negate the pressure coming at the QB, and Dak seems to be more natural at this.

- To piggy-back off the previous point, it's also obvious that a mobile QB that the defense has to respect is also a vital element to this offense. Dak has that. Play action was also an element that we utilized a lot more with Dak. Not sure why we didn't with Russell...

- I may be getting wooly, but I thought Dak did a very good job of understanding what the defense was giving him. He utilized the underneath patterns and the iso matchups. The second 4th down play (4th and long... right after the WTF timeout call) was beautiful. One of the best executed plays of the day.

- Dak made a couple of errors reading the DE. They didn't hurt us too bad, but against a stout DE, you have to make correct reads at the right time. He's getting there, but there were a few misreads.

- I still think he holds the ball too long. The ultimate threat Dak can bring is mobility, pocket vision, ability to quickly work progressions, and then hit quick hot routes. Dak showed a lot of potential in all those areas. He's not there yet, though.

Overall, great experience yesterday for him. I don't know if he would have had this chance had Russell not gotten hurt, but I imagine Dak got a huge boost of much-needed confidence running the entire offense. Glad Mullen gave him the opportunity to let the leash out and let his backups do their thing.

Now, my thoughts on the controversy... if Russell is healthy, he gets the nod. I don't think its time to pull him, but if it were me, this performance by Dak really gives me reason to shorten the leash on Russell if he does not perform well. I would also begin to use Dak more than just a Brunetti-type QB that only comes in to run right up the middle. If it were me, it would be time for Russell to step up, or we work Dak in more and more as the year goes on (much like we did with Ralph 1.0 and Tyson Lee).

Lastly, from here on, Williams will be referred to as Ralph 2.0. Good Grief, I had a severe case of deja vu seeing him work yesterday. He's much better than freshman Ralph 1.0. Excited to see him challenge for PT down the road.

Flame away... Go.

Dak just needs experience. Has the talent and will get much better with more playing time. Williams has what it takes to be very good as well, for someone who has only been in our system for 4 or 5 weeks we did well!

As comparing Williams to Relf, he is a better athlete who can pass the ball, glad he played. I also think we will see Russell and Dak sharing time from here on out, just like Russell and Relf.

Btw, 32 is a man, I also watched our O-Line a lot yesterday and they just look soft, Robinson was way over rated and has a long ways to go but I suppose we have no one else.

I am right with you on Dak. I Like Tyler but to me, i might get some flack but he's had his chance, his style just don't fit what Mullen runs. It's not like it's been one game it's been several, 7 straight. I think now is time to put Dak in and let him roll, it will be a great jump start for next year too, or at least split the time. Williams seems ruff and can take a hit, a good back up ..

THIS.....Because O-LINE will continue to SUCK against GOOD teams.

He stood in the pocket too long just like Russell. I'm not going to judge that yet though because he had the time to sit back in the pocket for a long time today. I'm just hoping he doesn't sit back there that long against Auburn

I don't take away a single thing as far as his performance...it was alcorn after all. But something I noticed about Dak that I guess I never have is that he has a lightning quick release.

Start Russell next week but have Dak prepared to play and play often.

The opponent was subpar. Not denying Dak looked good. Critique him after next week.

Do we judge Dak's performance by William's performance? It's only a matter of time.

That's the one thing I noticed. He does have a much quicker release. Russell takes forever to release the ball.

It's hard to take away anything from the game because Alcorn was absolutely atrocious. Good for him to get some reps. Never hurts.

As has been alluded to already in this thread .............................................................................

Check with me after (possibly) next week when we aren't playing in the loose equivalent of a scrimmage.

Dak threw a couple of passes in the first quarter that would have been intercepted by SEC secondaries. He seemed to be locked in on his preferred receiver. As he settled in, in the second quarter he began to look to his second and third options and get the ball out more quickly. I'm impressed.

The second quarter back shoulder TD toss to Milton was an example. That was the third checkdown. The problem from here on out is that with this ****** OL he will have less than half as much time back there as he had against that pitiful excuse for competition yesterday.

Did Dak run more of the old Relf system, or was he pigeonholed into the offense they built around Russel?

I'll say this, from the little I have seen from Dak, he could be a hell of a read-option QB. Big dude, runs hard. Once he gets comfortable and both he and his receivers click, yalls offense could really come together.
