5A South- #12 Springfield, #14 MacArthur, and #16 U High
6A South- #1 Glenwood

Friday
U High (5-4) at Washington (8-1)
U High beat Lanphier Week 9 to get their 5th win. They benefited from a favorable schedule, as their 5 victories came against teams with a combined record of 6-39. The Pioneers are not at that the level of last year's 4A semifinal team and that showed in running clock losses against Rochester and Chatham. After a 1-point loss in Week 1, Washington has won 8 straight. They typically have a strong running attack and made the 6A semifinals in 2023. Washington 41 U High 7. Massey: Washington 42-13.

Taylorville (5-4) at Rochester (8-1)
The last time these teams faced each other in the Battle of Route 29 was in the 2018 quarterfinals, won by Rochester 64-26. Taylorville beat Bethalto last week for their 5th win. Their 5 victories came against teams with a combined record of 9-36. They were competitive with Mt Zion, a common opponent, in Week 8, trailing at home only 14-12 at half before losing 25-12. Rochester had to come from behind to beat Mt Zion 28-24 in Week 2. Taylorville is led by Junior QB Isaac Repscher who has thrown for 1,400 yards and 15 TDs. Rochester has split time at QB between Senior Tanner Beal and Junior JP Leonard. They have combined for over 2,000 yards passing and 21 TDs. Rochester 45 Taylorville 14. Massey: Rochester 48-14.

Saturday
Springfield (5-4) at Providence Catholic (6-3) 1 PM
Springfield faced playoff qualifiers the last 5 weeks of the season, beating QND and Jacksonville but losing to SHG, Rochester, and Chatham. Last week, they led unbeaten Chatham 21-17 at half before losing 38-28. The Solons are led by Senior QB Brody Scheffler who has thrown for over 2,100 yards and 26 TDs. Springfield is averaging 38 points per game and can strike quickly but are also giving up 32 points a game. They have had special teams issues the last three weeks with punt mishaps in each game. Providence has played a very difficult schedule, losing by 3 points to Joliet Catholic last week after having won 3 straight that included wins over Loyola and Marist. Providence Catholic 48 Springfield 26. Massey; Providence Catholic 47-14.

SHG (6-3) at QND (7-2) 1 PM
A rematch with SHG winning the 1st game Week 4 at home 42-26. This contest will be at QND. The Raiders have given up only 103 points this season but 77 were in their two losses to SHG and Springfield. Junior QB John Venvertloh has had an impressive season throwing for over 1,400 yards and 24 TDs through Week 8. SHG is coming off of 34-31 and 31-28 down to the last second losses to Chatham and Rochester. QB Cam Brinkman had thrown for nearly 1,600 yards and 17 TDs through Week 8 and had three more passing TDs against Rochester last week. He is also very elusive and can throw on the run and under pressure. Winning twice over the same team in high school football, when talent levels are close, is difficult. QND has a chance at home but am still going with SHG in a close contest. SHG 35 QND 27. Massey: SHG 40-26.

Joliet Catholic (4-5) at Chatham (9-0) 2 PM
Chatham's reward for going 9-0, which included coming from multiple scores behind in the 4th Quarter to both Rochester in Week 4 and SHG in Week 8, was to draw perennial powerhouse Joliet Catholic. Should they manage to beat the Hilltoppers, the Titans will then face East St Louis in Round 2. While not at the level of last year's 5A runner-up, Joliet Catholic should provide Chatham with their most severe test of the season. Having seen them play SHG several times over the years, the Hilltoppers will be the biggest and most physical team Chatham will have faced. There simply isn't a comparative team in the CS8 to the Hilltoppers and the Titans 7A Week 1 opponent Edwardsville was down a bit this year. If Chatham is to have a chance, they will rely on 3-year starting QB Colten Knoedler who had thrown for over 1,800 yards and 27 TDs through Week 8 to have a career day. The Titans have shown they absolutely can't be counted out until the clock hits 0.0 but need to avoid falling as far behind as they did in Weeks 4 and 8 to have a shot. Joliet Catholic 38 Chatham 31. Massey: Joliet Catholic 35-20.

Jacksonville (5-4) at Olney Richland County (9-0) 5 PM
The Crimsons beat Lincoln Week 9 to get their 5th win. Their 5 wins came against opponents with a combined record of 11-34. Jacksonville plays an old school run first, second, and third style offense. They have passed for less than 200 yards on the season but have four players with between 515-775 yards rushing. The Crimsons got their best win of the season in Week 8 by coming from behind on the road at Decatur MacArthur and winning 36-33. Jacksonville at 840 students will be the largest enrollment school that Olney Richland (660) has faced this season. Olney beat Taylorville (726 enrollment) 60-36 in Week 1 but has also faced 6 teams with an enrollment of less than 500. The biggest red flag I see in their perfect record was a 28-27 Week 8 win over 1A Casey Westfield (235 enrollment). Olney Richland relies on a big play QB, Gavyn Cothern, to make their offense go. Cothern has thrown and rushed for a combined 2,700 yards and 39 total TDs on the season. As Chatham got a lousy draw, the Crimsons got a dream draw for a #16 seed. If their running game clicks, this is a very winnable game for Jacksonville. Jacksonville 41 Olney Richland 30. Massey: Olney Richland 38-36.

MacArthur (5-4) at Peoria (7-2) 7 PM
Peoria won 62-14 in the 1st round of the 2022 playoffs. MacArthur started out 5-1 before losing their last 3 games, including a Week 9 49-7 drubbing by QND. Their 5 wins came against opponents with a combined record of 13-32. Peoria has won 4 straight and is averaging 52 points per game. The General's defense is giving up 32 points per game. MacArthur has a strong running attack but unless they can grind out drives this could become lopsided quickly. Peoria 54 MacArthur 14. Massey: Peoria 50-20.

olney's qb isn't their only threat. #12 is an extremely quick and elusive rb and return specialist. they have a very physical te/de who's liasted at 6'7" and 220 lbs and he's every bit of 6'7". and lastly, u of i commit casey thomann who is 6'7" 315 lbs. he's the best o-lineman i've seen this year even though playing a 1a-3a schedule.

Outstanding job!!!

There is absolutely no way UHigh wins this game... Washington is a machine! The Panther O line pins its ears back and drive down hill. The Panthers best back is slightly built but has heart and speed. UHigh doesn't have the O line to keep pace. But, Hey... They made the playoffs!!!

Poor Taylorville... The Rockets are battle tested and they have grown up! Unless the Rockets are looking to round 2 they will have a running clock early!

The abyss of the rematch!!! Its all a mindset BUT... The winning team, in the first meeting, usually has issues in the rematch. It will come down to mistakes and the Raiders O/D lines. Its time to man up or bow out! I'm pulling for the Raiders but... SHG 35-31

*Forgot the New Lenox Providence/SHS game... By what Providence has done this season I see a 45-10 game...

This is a brutal game for Chatham. I am a fan of JCA and their running game but having coached at, and lived in, Chatham I pull for them... Mind over heart on this one... JCA is a team no one wants to see in the playoffs... I do believe the Hilltoppers are looking to next weeks game. I don't believe there is much respect towards Chatham and maybe there shouldn't be!? Chatham struggled against Edwardsville (4-5), Rochester (4A), SHG (4A) and SHS (5A) while JCA was going toe-to-toe with Lyons, Glenbard West, Fenwick, Naz Academy, Mt Carmel and Providence... On paper this isn't a game... JCA is big and built to run the ball down your throat while the Titans are a finesse team that runs the RPO... Mind says JCA 38-14...

Olney plays in a weak conference (1a-3A) and Jacksonville is the better team on every level. If Jacksonville has TOs things could get dicey! But I think Mark G will have the Crimsons ready... Jacksonville 45-21

Peoria will make this a track meet... If you look at DMac's smack down of Bloomington in last years playoff you can see where DMac could stay with Peoria... Giving up point doesn't bother the Lions so... What Generals team do we get? Peoria 65-49

As a Pioneer ‘23, I can all but guarantee that this game will be akin to the disaster that was Coal City a few years ago. The U has had a rough go of it this season, and had to make a lot of personnel changes after MacArthur. This included benching the QB and starting a senior linebacker under center, and moving the starting running back to guard. This year they’ve taken their lumps, but the future is very bright, especially in the junior and freshmen classes.

All.... A three hour plus road trip. When is departure time Coach just curious? Back in the day as you will recall a stop off in or near the town to a football field for a warm up before getting to the stadium was standard procedure. Do the Crimsons do that? Ratsy P.S. I would say check out Deuces Wild and all those the motorcycles out front but not with a bus load of youngins. Maybe another time. 😇

The Coal City team in '23 was, in my opinion, the hardest hitting team that Rochester played that year on the way to their state title. I was later informed that Coal City has a storied wrestling tradition...that made sense.

All.... This falls under next season "what's the story." I keep getting questions on this from not only Cyclone fans but the faithful of many other CS8 teams who I bump into at games. I haven't a clue.

There is supposed to be a review which comes up every two seasons by I suppose all of the Ad's or coaches for the two divisons. A possibility of teams moving into a different divison as well as changing week 8 and 9 crossover games is on the table as well.

I don't think any of that Roxana and Monticello "stuff" is going to pass (if it even gets to a membership vote) so changes could be coming in 2026 . Anyone have additional info on this? Ratsy

No solid info, just a few thoughts.

One problem the first two years of the revised CS8 East/West divisions was that only 5 of the 12 schools were able to schedule both Week 1 and 2 games for '24 and '25 with out of conference (ooc) opponents. 6 schools were able to schedule 1 ooc opponent and Lincoln couldn't schedule any.

By having to "fill" one or both of those Week 1 and/or 2 games with cross over division opponents, that reduced the options for cross over matchups for Weeks 8 and 9. As an example, Springfield vs MacArthur would've been a solid Week 8 or 9 game but they had already faced each other Week 2.

If everyone could get two ooc opponents for '26 and '27, which is unknown at this time, a possible Week 8/9 schedule could look something like this:
Chatham- SHG/Springfield
Rochester- QND/SHG
MacArthur- Springfield/QND
U High- Jacksonville/Southeast
Eisenhower- Lanphier/Jacksonville
Lincoln- Southeast/Lanphier

In the past at Chatham, we talked briefly about adding from the Big 12 since those schools aligned with most of the CS8. This was only small talk with no driven impetus motivating said discussion.

Awesome stuff, rocket. Appreciate the time you put in to this sir.

I said part of this elsewhere... I can't be there this Saturday, so @cornerrat#1 , enjoy the W, enjoy the gloating, enjoy the I told you so, enjoy all the other things you're awarded for beating us twice in the same year. You did what you're expected to do.

No matter the personal feelings, take care of business and go beat the **** out of Rochester, respectfully of course in a competitive sense... I would hope we can still agree that's one of the ultimate goals here. I'm done assuming there's any mutual respect between us or that there ever was or will be. I can only say I apologize for the personal attacks and that I'll remain a fan of yours and SHG for the same reasons I've always rooted for your program. And, that just like in the past, I'll be pulling for you by next week yet again once we're eliminated. I don't expect an apology in return, or even a response if I'm being honest, I just wanted to air my side. Safe travels to Quincy this weekend. The Scoreboard is a wonderful hole in the wall. Pickle shots all around!

I kind of like the draw for QND in the bracket. Nostalgic in a sense, except SHG's here now. Its pretty close to what myself and many in QND's camp expected coming into this season. Seemed most logical and inevitable that QND and SHG and Rochester would end up in a triangle of Oreo-love this November. I'm only upset at all with how this plays out because a. we'll likely not get a shot at Rochester this year and b. I'll likely miss Doellman and this teams' last game as a group. This has been a very fun class of seniors to watch.

To everyone else, safe travels and good luck.
-Glenwood shock the state!
-Rochester stay healthy!
-Jacksonville go give 'em that good ole' Morgan County two-step.
-Mac, this is football, not basketball O/U 139.5?!?!
- U-High, you squeezed a playoff berth out of this season. That's a positive.
-Springfield, hopefully you all play and hopefully Brody can connect with Thurman and Newman one or two last times.

Mr Pick'em2 is continuing to be conservative...

IF DMac hold Peoria to 40 they should count that as a win...
IF the Jacksonville/Olney game is within 7 that means Jacksonville had TOs
IF Washington on wins by 16 they also had too many TOs
IF Providence gives up 34 to SHS there would have to be TOs and Pick 6's...
I expect the SHG/QND game to be close... That's my heart talking...
My crystal ball doesn't show the Titans winning against JCA...

Ratsy
yes, the crossover games are up for possible switching.

I've said this before but I'm fairly sure the crossover games are set based on how teams finish in their division of the conference with 1 & 2 playing each other and so on down the line. If so, the crossovers next year will be what's below based on my understanding. The possible wrenches would be if they use overall record instead of conference record (Then you would flip QND and Springfield) or if its based on 2 years of records.

Chatham and Rochester vs SHG and Springfield
MacArthur and U-High vs QND and Jacksonville
Lincoln and Eisenhower vs Southeast and Lanphier

Awe, but we were told if we beat SHG in year 1 we'd get Rochester in year 3... 😁 We better just collect our playoff L and go on home...
