An old coaching adage could shed some partial light on this situation: "When an offensive and defensive coach get to arguing, the last one with the chalk usually wins." In current HS games, the offensive coach either in the stands or on the sideline represents the "last one with the chalk" by virtue of his ability to tailor the play call to the defense, in spite of how the alignment may be disguised or changed.
