The old helmet logo with the "rocket" going through the "M?" What is the explanation for that? I'm not being an ***, I just really want to know the origin of that logo. I've always thought it was a clean, sharp logo (not your best, though), but it has always confused me.

I'm not an expert

but I think that was when we were the Maroons... And I'm not sure about the origin behind it, but I would bet it has something to do with the A&M, engineering part of our school...

Those are all total guesses.

I feel ya. I've wondered the same thing. I think it's pretty sweet... I wish we offered it on some shirts or other gear.

Was it the Uranus space program? It's the best time of year to see Uranus.

You can see Uranus rising as the sun sets. You can see it close to the full moon. Although, the light from the full moon may hide Uranus.

I've always heard that it was related to Apollo space program. I can't verify that, though.

I was just talking about this logo with some friends this week and we all agreed that it was our all-time favorite MSU logo, and that if it were available on a t-shirt, we'd all buy the hell out of it. Somebody needs to make this happen!

The logo was used in the late 1960's, when the whole country went space crazy due to the Apollo program.

For those that don't know what logo we are talking about, here is a sample from my cowbell.
The bell and decal is still the original late-60s/early 70s decorations as the bell was my mom's when she was at State. I never took it while I was in college thanks to the fear of getting it taken away (instead I just bought throw-aways that I didn't care about).

Dude. Nice. Smart move keeping that gem at home.

Also, I just watched the latest Sherlock Holmes movie.... So I'm gonna take my deductive powers for a spin... You, Chris, used to play baseball and speak Spanish. Your wife, Kate, is an artist.

How'd I do? Impressive? Creepy? Both?

Your powers of deduction are mind boggling...
...ly poor.

I DID play baseball (my Dad and uncle both played for State, I did not...after high school I moved from shortstop to beer). I speak english...almost. I speak enough spanish to order a margarita and some queso.
I'm the artist. Kate is my daughter. My wife, on the other hand is a ChemE that also graduated from State.

Soooo...you're batting about 25% or so. Keep watching the show. I'm sure you'll get better. heh

Also, the only reason that I had that picture...

...to post is that my coworkers were completely befuddled when I started talking about going to the game and tailgating and ringing cowbells. They are all cerebral New England Ivy-leaguers who don't even know it's football season (I telecommute to Boston every day). Anyway, I had to send them a picture to show them what I was talking about (also sent a picture of tailgating in the Junction). While I think they are still in a bit of a fog about "this whole football thing" they did admit that a stadium full of cowbells sounded like a cool idea.

It was used as someone said, in the late 60s and 70s. But we were Bulldogs then, not Maroons (I think that was changed in the early 60s). I was at MSU then, and I never heard an explanation of the logo but it seems to have a space theme, keyed to the interest of the nation in the space program. The arrows do indeed look like a rocket and would seem to represent the future, on the way up, progressiveness, etc.

I always liked the logo too. Sharp looking.

I had always heard

that it was to represent to engineering program at MSU. Maybe it had something to do with John C Stennis and the rockets that they used to build on the coast? Maybe it had to do with our badass passing offense led by Tommy Pharr?

I have said that I would like for us to wear throwback uniforms and helmets with that logo on them for homecoming and make it a tradition for us. It's a cool retro logo and I don't think Nike owns it, so I guess that clears us as far as that.

But you wouldn't be getting 50 FB games on a Saturday without the space program. There would be no satellite television.

I think we have a winner for the next officially unofficial t-shirt. The "rocket M" logo.

I doubt that the school recognizes it as a mark, so if not, we could use it, where we can't use current or more recent logos.

My dad worked for a summer @ NASA Stennis Space center in 1969 on the Apollo Rocket Engine development. He took me with him (at age 6) to watch them test fire a rocket engine. It was bad ***. They lit that ***** up and I had never seen so much smoke and fire. Then came the loud roar of the engine and earth began to shake like we were having a an earthquake. Something I will never forget. A few months later a little storm called Camille came to town.

Without the space program, yes. Without NASA... well, let's just say the claims about technological innovation that came out of the manned space program are over exaggerated.

You are without a doubt the most hateful poster on Nafoom about MSU. I find it highly doubtful that you are genuinely interested in anything that you can`t attempt to embarrass us with. Your obsession drove you to ask this...now what were you digging for prick ?

You just had to try to ruin a decent, interesting thread

If you don't like his posts on NAFOOM, argue them there. Why go all Arkansas during an actual interesting thread?

I don't hate the space program..just believe those resources could be better utilized solving some of the problems we have on this earth.

NASA's budget is what? 1% of the defense budget. You really think the pitiful resources we spend on NASA are going to make a difference? I think I hear it comes out to about $0.28 per American. So you could maybe get a piece of gum. And that is worth giving up on space? Can't wait to see how you feel when we find a Earth-killer asteroid and we don't have the capacity to do something about it.

Some people amaze me. Our quest for space has led to amazing advancements in technology, science and medicine. We should double or triple NASA's budget, not cut it.

The Flying M was used when I was in school, and I once saw the writeup explaining its significance. It was something similar to "onward and upward," the best I recall.

Scientific research is key to solving our problems. NASA's tiny budget could be multiplied by 10 and still be drop in the bucket.

It's actually about 3% of the DoD budget and a bit less than 1% of the national budget. Much, much less than entitlement programs.

Note that MSU finished ahead of the biggies like CalTech, MIT, and Vanderbilt (not really known for engineering, but a good school nevertheless). And that is extremely noteworthy.
