I don’t know that I recall this many Power Conference openings this early in the season. Now that I see this list and where we would fall in it, I may be back on the “one more year” wagon (though begrudgingly so).

A lot of the sec coaches (saban, Kelly, and even former and current Auburn coaches) hated to see the rotating schedules coming because they wouldn’t get to beat up on Miss State every year.
but the new format would have helped a coach like Dan Mullen take Miss State to the SECCG

I think you can safely pencil in Florida St and Wisconsin. Fickell is dead man walking.

The whole coaching fire/carousel starting mid season is a black eye for the sport. I don't know if you can adjust signing day and portal window to May, but it would be nice if they did. Because maybe then schools ... boosters would allow coaches to finish seasons.

We’re never going to be competing for big name coaches anyways. You never decide to fire or not fire a guy based on what is going on elsewhere. That’s all outside of our control. What we do control is continuing our investment in the current coach, or cutting bait. That decision has to be made in a vacuum.

I think it’s so they can start reaching out to agents without creating controversy or conflicts of interests when there’s agent overlap between the current HC and the prospective HC.

They also don’t want to be back of the line when jobs at or around their tier start opening up.

Yeah I guess too many important things are accelerated immediately after season end. The the need to get your new guys in place plus having to re-recruit chunks of your own roster makes you need a guy ready to go asap. This system is brutal.

A black eye ? How many "eyes" does the sport have.......it already has about 25 "black eyes".

Florida didn’t want Penn State to hire the guy they wanted. LSU didn’t want Florida to hire the guy they wanted.

Indiana proved they’re willing to pay. They supposedly included a clause that said he would be one of the 3 highest paid coaches in the sport.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ole Miss does similar.
If/when either leaves it won’t be a matter of just chasing more money.

So what happens when 4 coaches have contracts that say they be 1 of the 3 highest paid coaches in the sport? Does it just spiral upwards to infinity? You better be careful with clauses like that. You have no idea how much that might be in a couple of years. Or a couple of months.

The deal is we are directly competing with Arkansas (who’s completely content with giving Petrino the job), Va Tech, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State (who sounds like they’ve settled on Zac Robinson), plus whichever jobs open up as a result of PSU, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, and possibly Texas hiring sitting P4 coaches and Tennessee could very well come open if Oklahoma decides to throw the money at Heupel.

We need to be 100% in or 100% out on Jeff Lebby returning for a third year after Saturday’s game. If we end up losing it, Selmon needs to be making phone calls Saturday night and Sunday to potential candidates and have an agreement in principal with a coach before Black Friday.

I’m not sure about FSU. Talked to a longtime donor/booster last week and was told they have 2 alums that can and would write the check today, but Alford hasn’t even had the conversation with them.

Lost in all of this insanity is the UNC job.

I read his deal was, IF he reached the playoff semis, then he would receive a bonus making him one of the top 3 highest paid coaches...and if they couldn't come to terms on that bonus then he could leave without paying a buyout.

The real problem with this type of clause is figuring out what the other coaches are really making, considering bonuses, perks, retention incentives, etc.

Back in the 90s, Warren Moon's contract with the Oilers said if he was one of the top 3 passers in the league then he would get a raise to ensure he was paid the average of the top 3 QB salaries. One year he was due the raise, but he and the team were about $1 Million apart on what his salary should be. The teams would claim they were paying their QBs a base pay, then the agents for the players would say their client was being paid much more than that due to bonuses and the like. They couldn't even agree as to which 3 QBs were the highest paid.
