Stride can be for either timing or power...check Todd Frazier, he strides for power...check Albert Pujols, he lifts it up and sets it down (more timing).
Squash the bug is probably good for young guys - but as they get older, that back foot should really power up and through the pitcher...power should move straight to where the ball came from, squash the bug is more rotational (going away from where the power needs to go)...but squash the bug can help be a teaching point of throwing open the hips...another thing you can say is just to get that belly button to the pitcher.
