From my recollection, a good article (cant remember the source) written earlier this year pointed out Dak's Dad (very importantly) reformed his relationship with Dak's mother when she got ill and took care of her through it all. Thus, he's been around significantly for some time, and there for everyone during a very difficult period.
I'd imagine that's why it's important to him. He's been a big part of their family dynamic through some very difficult times. The article also pointed out that Dak's mother and father were always close, although separate for some time. Given each of their family members have spoken about it, I don't think they're overly sensitive about their history. Seems, to the contrary, they're comfortable with openly discussing how they feel. When a reporting crew is lazy and doesn't get it right, given all they've been through, he should be upset.
Fortunately, CBS can amend their perspective in front of a national audience this weekend.
