Update: Message from his family...

"Our family would like to inform all of Gerald's friends that Gerald Berry passed this evening of a heart attack at the age of 66. Gerald has always been and always will be a legend in Starkville as well as the bulldog community. Whether you remember Gerald as the guy always riding his bike, or the old bearded man sitting on the barstool next to you at BIN 612 any night of the week, or the guy sitting next to you in the MSU library posting random articles on Facebook, or the uncle that we use to call Santa clause, or the short grey haired man taking your picture he will be greatly missed. Thanks for all of your knowledge and great memories uncle Gerry, this budweiser is for you. "

A Starkville legend.

If you don't know his name, you would know him as the homeless guy in the yellow coat with the long hair, impressive beard, and camera that was always around the bars. One of the most unfortunate life stories I have ever heard.

I used to see him all the time at the dark horse. Talked to him several times and even bought him a few beers. I guess I didn't realize he was homeless.

Yeah. He was my photography prof at MSU and I've always liked chatting with him whenever I ran into him when I visited Starkville.

He wasn't homeless. Lived over in the old Waverly area (no clue exactly).

Ole Gerald. I'm gonna miss seeing him when I visit next. He was always a constant.

Yeah, I think he lived in the Cotton District when I lived there (I think)- he wasn't homeless then, I know.

He lived on colonel muldrow when I was there. The leader of the cotton district klan of hippies that used to hang out at the house between the bin and old grill.

Rumor was he sold his life policy to Dave's for his bar tab.

I never talked to him but he always seemed to be around. Glad he was able to enjoy Vegas for so long.

Hate to see that but Gerald had a good run.

He lived his life on his terms and there is a lot to be said for that. The man could drink some beer.

Amen to that! Will be strange not seeing him around. Times are a changing around MSU and it almost seems a fitting time for him to take his exit! RIP Gerald.
