Dan and Megan Mullen, Starkville and some comments I read tonight...

I've heard and read on here and other State message boards that the Mullens really love living in Starkville. I have honestly been somewhat skeptical regarding this. Let's be honest, it's rare to find many people outside of the MSU family that really love Starkville. I would venture the guess that even some of you would never want to move back there full time. I wouldpack up and leave Jacksonville in the morning if I could find a job making what I do here. I hoped that the Mullens were quirky enough that they really did enjoy living there.

Now we have these coaching rumors with Miami, Colorado, Minny...whatever position is open, if Dan's name comes up regarding the position he isconsidered a top option. I've read Mullen's comments regarding these, the "I've not been contacted". I've yet to see him say neitherhis rep or agent have had talks with anyone, just that he has not been contacted. And he might be totally honest and has had no contact himself or through his agent.

I say all of this because of a comment he made tonight. While at the Connerly presentation he was asked about the U job again. His only comment was the media was asking the wrong person about him leaving, they should be asking the person around the corner, refering to Megan. He said my wife loves living in Starkville. When I read that comment, it was the first time I felt that they really like living in Starkville and I was also no longer worried about him leaving anytime soon. I do not believe Dan Mullen is going anywhere this year. And I think this regardless of the rumor that Gruden is close to a deal now.

Do I think he'll leave one day, sure I could see it happening. Could I fault him, not really. Would I be surprised if he were still here in 10 years, not anymore.

and supposedly it went something like-

you will get offers to move on to bigger and better schools, but you will never love anyplace like you will Mississippi State nor be appreciated as much. Think about that before you accept another job.

He is going to leave at some point- but it wont be easy for him to make the decision.

State fans still love and appreciate the man. If you win at State, you will be great appreciated. Really, that is an understatement. Dan Mullen could take a giganticdump on the 50 yard line at whatever bowl we play in and State fans would be talking about how great it was. </p>

Thank you for that. I was at another disappointing basketball game and didn't see or listen to the connerly(sp) trophy presentation (not sure if it was on the radio or not).

That really instilled confidence in me because, like you, I knew that Mullen would not say anything about a new job offer. He holds things pretty close to his chest. Ralph has had a torn ligament in his throwing had all season and I haven't seen anyone talking about that on here, nor have I read about it in the paper. Ralph also pulled a hamstring in "The Battle" (for the Golden Egg) that I have heard nothing about. I hope he truly loves it as much as Megan.

I absolutely hated my first year there, after JuCo, but by the time I finished grad school, I didn't want to leave.
I had fallen in love with Redneck Tech.

The Ninja loved MSU also, and I think he still does.

Dan's on a mission. He's a career guy. I hope he stays with us long enough to attain his purpose with MSU.
He alone knows what that is.
I hope he's able to lead us where he said, to the national championship game.
That's where we want to go, right?

I had an opportunity to sit with Megan at a dinner. We had a nice conversation over the hour and half. Megan looked me in the eye a number of times telling me how she and Dan wanted their son to graduate high school in Starkville because it was such a wonderful place to raise a family. I believed every word she said, as she was very sincere. Now, they may leave tomorrow, but for some reason, I think they will stay as Jackie stayed. They may not stay like Bowden at FSU, but I believe they are hear for a while.

Miss State does not hop up and fire coaches. In thirty years Mississippi State has had only five football coaches. We seem to be more forgiving and patient when it comes to a coach having off years. Every coach will have off years. Yes at some schools a off year is eight wins but they still have them. Miss State is a school that with the right out of conference scheduling could have six to eight winsevery years and the coach can make a lot of jack during his tenor. Job seurity might not matter to a lot of coaches but if the wife is happy and you are making better then 2 million a year, all is well.

I know I sure do. I've been faithfully following MSU football for nearly 30 years and 95% of my best memories of MSU football (especially before Mullen) were with JWS roaming the sidelines. His last 3 years don't wash that away.

If you think anyone outside of a college student cares about dollar night, you are crazy. I am all for Mullen staying in Starkvegas but come on. Miami vs Starkville. Restaurants, bars, nightlife, beaches, etc. etc. Sit back, say it out loud, and then tell me if it is so hard to believe that Mullen would leave for the U.

not attractive to parents raising a family there ... not to mention the fact that $ 2 mil goes much further in Starkville than does in Miami

@spa2 you really think Miami atmosphere is better than Stark? The football stadium is 30 minutes away from campus not to mention their President of the University is a woman that cares nothing for sports. Along with the main language down there being spanish and the people not as hospitable as here in Stark. But i think the main reason is come on Dan Mullen is not near good enough in shape to be hanging around South Beach.

What if Dan isn't into nightlife, beaches, bars, ect. ect. What if Dan likes a quiet small town and hamburger helper onWednesday nights with his family?

However, it certainly wouldn't be surprising at all for an adult (from the NE at that) with children to be turned off by Miami. Have you ever been to Miami? Yeah, it's got good restaurants and night life, but definitely ranks up there on the list of places I don't mind visiting but would never want to live. It's a little out there...

Again, I have no idea what Dan Mullen's preference is. But let's not act like the grand city of Miami will pull anyone out of Starkville just because of the style points.

This is my thought as well. Granted he could very well leave tomorrow but I don't think it would be because Miami has more nightclubs. If he leaves its because a better opportunity presents itself, not because the town has tons of hot ***.

And more fat 17'ers per square inch than anywhere in America,
And a large % of the population that can't speak English.

Guess tradeoffs are everywhere.

is that he appears to consider himself a Bulldog now. He doesnt do nearly as much or be associated with Bama, A&M, Pitt combined like he does State.

And I'm glad to see us reciprocate

Jackie is still involved with the Aggies, and writes three columns for one of their subscrption sites every week. And, as much as I like Jackie's columns for Michael, the ones for Texags.com seem to be more refined. That may be because Michael doesn't edit Jackie's column and Texags does, I don't know.

Also, Jackie is involved/founded the 12th MKOT Foundation. Didn't he move back to TX recently?

Jackie is a lot more involved with A&M than he is MSU.

Since when is dollar night a factor in cost of living?

Real estate is higher in Miami, of course, but Florida doesn't have state income tax. There's an extra 100 grand a year right there.

As a resident of Tennessee, which also doesn't have an income tax, let me set you straight on one thing. The State ALWAYS get's it's money. It's not like Florida is saying, "Shucks, no income tax, I guess we will just have to do without!" And where Florida gets you is in the property taxes. If you would like a visual representation of how bad it is head on down to Orange Beach, AL. As you drive toward Florida you will notice every inch of beach-front is owned and most of it is developed. Then you cross the state line and it tails off big time. No one is going to build in Florida and pay those property taxes when they could scoot down a few miles and pay what Bama charges.

If you move his Starkville house to Miami that 100 grand and a lot more goes out the window in a hurry.
