Dan Mullen - would his ego let him take the job?

Call me stupid if you must, but I don't see Penn State being capable or willing offer any head coach who has not won a national championship as a HC or a Superbowl as a HC the kind of money it would take for him to leave even poor little Mississippi State. You have got to remember that Dan was scheduled to make $2.65 million this year. Joe Pa was only making $1.9 million (I will bow to the concession that he was merely a puppet with a headset on his head. I will also bow to the USA Today report stating that PSU has the 3rd most profitable athletics department in the country.

Seems to me that Dan's ego is pretty big and he is not going to take a pay cut to go to even PSU.

And I am not going to even mention the radioactive situation that is surrounding that program right now........ I am thinking the athletic department may need to stuff some of those huge profits away to pay for settlements and to make up for lost revenue from embarrassed boosters at the moment.

JoPaw did not ask nor need more.
I think they are #2 behind Texas in Sports revenues. If not, they are close to it.

I felt pretty safe about Mullen once his salary was raised last year. You figure he is making $2.5+ right now, plus MSU would be willing to pay a little more to keep him. So, he's not likely to leave for less than $3 mil/ year, and would probably require more than that. Yes, there are quite a few schools out there who can afford to pay that kind of money for a coach, but why would you pay that much for Mullen? I'm not sure you can sell that to your big money alums. The man simply does not have a resume supporting that kind of salary.

I like Mullen, and I want him to be successful, but I don't think he should be one of the top 15 highest paid coaches right now. Of course, Kirk Ferentz and Brady Hoke don't belong in that list either, and we are talking about the B1G, so maybe they would offer that kind of cash.

Urban Meyer just took a job at Ohio State(the) for $4mil today. They had not paid that to Trussell either. The anti is going up.

Would I up our salary to Mullen now, no, not at this time.

I agree 100%, I did not look at what OSU was paying Meyer. I also had temporary amnesia on Joe Pa's financial situation and how he really did not need the paycheck from PSU.

Also agree that PSU CAN pay as much as needed to get a coach they want. I guess my real thoughts are why would PSU pay Dan Mullen $3 million plus? I do see them offering someone such as Gruden $4 million plus but NOT someone like Mullen.

Why is it so hard to understand. Penn State is to Dan and his family what MSU is to us. While he didn't attend college there, his dad is a graduate and Penn State fan.

If the roles were reversed, a long lost son of MSU who left the big, bad northeast would come home to Starkville a hero.

Dan would likely have the same feeling for PSU that I guess Hud does for MSU, didn't go to school there or play there but still has some allegiance.

Penn State wants to call on him. I'm not saying Penn State doesn't have the money, but I doubt they want to at least match his current salary and pay the buyout. I thinkDan would be a better candidatefor the job the next time it opens. No one knows what's going to happen at Penn Statein the coming months. The program hasthe potential to suffer tremendously. Even the NCAA is involved and a total lack of Institutional control is not out of the question.I think the coach that gets this job is in for a difficult time.
