Dandy Don Meredith dies............

One of the Cowboys first stars. A real football player from SMU (unlike a certain ESPN prima donna I could mention). One of the Cowboys first stars...just never could get them over that Championship hump. Underrated QB, and excellent companion to Howard and Frank in the booth - ESPN, CBS, FOX are all still looking for a trio that can equal that group.

and as usual they were going back and forth with their usual chatter. Then Don calmly says "Howard, what did you go and do that for?" and then for several minutes you didn't hear Howard any more. We found out later that Howard had been self-medicating a cold with copious amounts of bourbon and had suddenly thrown up on Don's cowboy boot.

Once when leaving Cleveland after a game the team plane had trouble gaining altitude. Walt Garrison said he and everybody else were praying while Bob Lily ran up the isle screaming they were all gonna die. Walt said Dandy Don stood up with a beer in his hand and toasted everybody. Don was grinning as he said, " Boys, it's been a good one." He then sat down and started calmly drinking his beer.
Walt said after that, 4th and 5 wasn't that big a deal when you had Don as your QB.

Meredith oncesaid of Walt Garrison, "If it was third down, and you needed four yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, he'd get ya five. And if was third down and ya needed 20 yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, by God, he'd get you five."
