Despite him maybe not having the longevity as these other hall of fame levelscoaches , the old colonial forge coach, Mike smith, Richard Morgan, Mickey Thompson etc.. and the off the field controversy, do we label Darryl Overton as an all time great VA coach? Top ten vhsl team of all time with freedom, and with what he’s doing with the st James even though it’s not a traditional high school?

It is not that he isn't a good coach, it is because the teams he had at Freedom and Hayfield were mostly recruited. He has had great success at SJA but that is far from the same as what happened while in the VHSL and therefore, IMO, does not merit including his teams at Hayfield and Freedom in the discussion. Apples and oranges; the same as the argument about including private schools and public schools in the same polls. It is not a level playing field. Again, my opinion, I know others disagree.

Oh ok yeah that makes sense and I agree. His teams just don’t or haven’t operated in coordinance of VHSL guidelines. Just wanted to get someone’s take who has been following ball longer than me and older so I’m not stuck in prisoner of the moment lol. You think st James should be included in national rankings? I see where it’s hard for maxpreps to generate them into the rankings cause of their short track record.

From what I saw around online, MaxPreps considers them a post-grad school. So I think that plays apart in it.

Yes, that is the main fault with Max Preps-the algorithm depends on past success too much. I do think SJ should be in the national rankings (where? I certainly cannot say) as they have proven they can compete with and win against national opponents.

I also agree with what edwinanderson2nd said, so it is hard to define this.
