He was likely going to be the swing guy at OT with Senior likely starting. Warren or Carter will have to step it up now, which is kind of worrisome with neither having experience. If they end up moving Malone to RT it will affect our depth at guard. We'll be seeing what Carter and Warren or Thomas and Desper are made of very early.
I'm hoping it was just a nod to him for being a senior. He's a good teammate and guy from all accounts but he's never been anything more than a backup. If he really is our 2nd best tackle then we may have problems
Agreed. Our OL, and maybe our offense in general, right now rides on Senior. Good news is it's probably been like that. The general trend is that the staff isn't moving Malone from OG. I guess that says a lot about Senior/Warren at RT.
Let's not act like this is catastrophic for the team. There's not a huge gap between Robinson and Senior. Senior actually started the BG game last season as a rFR over Robinson. Plus, they've got 3 games to figure it out before SEC play begins.
If this didn't happen now, they'd just be kicking the can down the road to next season when they lose both Clausell and Day.
And Senior is on the more favorable side of that gap. I hate it for Damien, but his injury is about the least impactful among o-line who are going to play meaningful time this season. It'll also help us next year to have veteran experience during a pretty significant transition period for the line, assuming he gets and takes a medical redshirt this year.
