Anyone else feel like the media has tried to present him as the second coming for years? I don’t think he’s terrible, but it feels like he inherited what Harbaugh built then slowly let it die. Not sure how much Stanford cares about its football program these days, but they have a bad team.

He did get into Stanford and actually got a degree from there. He was a coach’s son and had family money, and he got a football scholarship. So he certainly had a lot of advantages financially to help him succeed academically before college, but I don’t know how much of that he utilized or how much Stanford cut him a break on admissions due to being on football scholarship.

Well, Christian McCaffrey taking it to the NFL happened to him. They haven't had a lot since.

And Stanford has maybe the least passionate fanbase in the Power 5, only rivaled by Vandy. Can’t imagine Shaw is on any kind of hot seat yet.

Yeah, I think my take is coming more from seeing his teams ranked higher in the polls to start the season than when they finish, yet announcers are heaping praise on him every time I watch a Stanford game (which admittedly isn’t often). It’s typically things about how all the NFL teams would be lucky to have him. For example, Wikipedia says he’s been PAC-12 coach of the year four times, most recently in 2017. That year he did win his division but the team was 9-5 and ended ranked 20th.

Believe it or not, there have been seasons that Stanford had few California players on roster. There are seasons that many players from the South are on the roster. If a player from Atlanta or Dallas are on the Stanford roster, are they SEC players? If you are a blue chip player that qualifies at Stanford, you will be well taken care of. Stanford takes care of athletes after they graduate, Dot Coms and Tech are in line to assure this?

I’ve attended a few Stanford games in the past— all in the old stadium— back when I used to work there and also while visiting family who at the time lived in the Bay Area.

Stanford fans and more importantly the university administration want and have an expectation of success and they are willing to spend money— unlike Vanderbilt which as well documented has not upgraded their football stadium.

I found the quote. It was related to the NCAA ban on satellite camps. He meant the players from states in the Southeast:

“I’m great with whatever college football says, because it doesn’t affect us. It doesn’t make sense for us to go hold a camp some place where there might be one person in the entire state that’s eligible to get into Stanford.”

So yeah, 17 that guy.
