Kind of strange. I didn't expect him to get a top tier Div. 1 job but I thought he would do better than that.

Location location location. The man likes Disney World.

UCF does have 60,000 students.

No state income tax and one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in America.

He wasn't on the market long. Despite his lack of success at Stanford, I think that speaks to what people think of him and his character.

How is UCF so awful at football/basketball???
They did not win a football game this year, and I do not recall there basketball program ever making the tournament.
It's a school in FL, 60,000 students, etc. etc.
I just looked up their basketball arena and it doesn't look too bad.

Congrats though Johnny, and good luck. You may need it.

UCF is my alma mater and this was a better get for UCF than it was for Dawkins. Here is what you need to know:
UCF has great facilities, a new arena, and is the largest school in the country by undergrad enrollment. The local area is good, not great for basketball recruiting, much much better for football recruiting. However, there is much less competition for basketball recruits. Dawkins can do well recruiting here.
The school is overshadowed by University of Florida because it is a relatively new university so the older generation are still UF fans.
UCF made the tournament in '94, '95, '04, and '05. They should have beat #2 UConn in '05. They got hit for recruiting violations in 2012 and had a postseason ban and just got off probation a year ago I think. Their last coach Donnie Jones was awful and killed the program.
UCF made a great football hire this offseason in Scott Frost the OC from Oregon. They won the Fiesta Bowl 2 years ago.
In my opinion, the school is primed for a quick turnaround in football. This year was fluky.
The turnaround for the men's basketball team will probably take longer unless Dawkins can hit on some recruits. But the potential is there.

UCF football is normally decent. Last year was aberrational.

With that said, as much talent as there is in Florida, UCF's probably #4 or #5 on the list of schools a top athlete will consider attending within the state of Florida -- after UF, FSU, Miami and on par with USF. Couple that with the may SEC/ACC schools that have longstanding recruiting ties to the state -- and it's not as easy as you'd think. While anything is possible in college basketball, I don't think UCF is a particularly good place for a basketball program -- as there's not a ton of tradition, it doesn't play in a major league, the state of Florida is not a particularly fertile place for basketball talent (i.e., it's nowhere comparable to how it is in football), it's still a bit of a commuter school, and people in the region definitely care a lot more about football than basketball. Can you build a solid mid-major program there? Yes, in basketball, a great coach can make any program relevant. With that said, if JD couldn't win big at Stanford, not sure how the task is going to get any easier at UCF.

I'm personally a bit surprised he didn't sit out a year to survey his options. While I'm not sure that he could have done better, I certainly think it's possible.

UCF's Athletic Director is the son of Duke's Athletic Director, according to what a journalist on Twitter mentioned.

Dawkins won't be put under any immediate pressure to win, so it's a decent fit in a great recruiting area in a school with great facilities and one of the best campus's in the country.

I have disagreed with everything aah has said on other threads, but I 100% agree with this. UCF is the 4th or 5th best program in a state that cares way more about football than basketball. Definitely gonna be an uphill battle.

How is UCF so awful at football...

Awful in football?
* 7 bowl games since 2005, including 1 BCS bowl
* Produced 36 NFL players, including 5 Pro Bowlers

jwill, do your homework before criticizing. Makes you look real bad.

UCF was a running joke all season on twitter due to there football team. A bar down in the area offered free alcohol for each game until they win. They failed to win a single game this season. What am I missing???

They were in the conference USA from 2005-2012, and finished with a record of 60-44 in that time. So sorry if this offends anyone, but making a bowl each year from the conference USA can still be considered awful amongst the big boys.

I could field a team of all Div 1 football players from the state of FL and I'm sure a lot would become NFL players. Well, maybe not me, but anyone else could.

UCF moved to the Big East in 2013 which became the AAC and they went 15-1 in conference their first 2 seasons with 2 conference championships, a BCS bowl win and a Top 10 AP finish. So they haven't been terrible. But they certainly don't have a long proud history.

There have rumors for awhile now that the Big 12 could scoop up UCF but that idea seems to have been put on hold

I live 5 minutes outside of Cincinnati, and all of the UC fans are DESPERATE to join the Big12. This has been a discussion around here since conferences started realigning (2009ish).
Every year the story changes, 1 year things are looking great and the next year there is no chance. Rinse, repeat.

To me, the Big12 should add 2 more teams, UC and UCONN. Sure, the locations are weird, but does it even matter anymore???
