Our power was out in Houston, TX for 13 days after Hurricane Ike. We had to deal with the scorching heat and humidity instead of the cold.
I think the cold would be way worse. I hate it for you.

8 1/2 days for a friend in Nashville I talked to last night. John Rich from Big & Rich band lit up the Nashville mayor on Friday on FOX News. The mayor cut $7.5 MILLION from the tree trimming budget this year and they have trees down EVERYWHERE

I don't know. Both sound really miserable. And potentially deadly for some people.

They used the money to hire Arborists. They cut the budget because the DEI CEO of Nashville Electric said trimming trees is bad for the trees and Nashville had to correct its canopies

Maintaining the trees around your power lines isn't small government. MLGW finally got the hint and got up to date on its tree trimming last year and what do you know, we don't have an outage every time the wind blows.
Whatever they did, it worked great and they should get their kudos since they catch the other end regularly (deservedly). MLGW didn’t have a single outage. Only 12 people lost power at “peak storm”, and those appeared to be isolated incidents.

Not maintaining ROW is like playing Russian Roulette. You're probably not going to get hurt the first year, or even the second. But if you play long enough, you will lose. And at least 5 people in Nashville have died from this.

We suffered through seven days of balls-velcroing-to-thigh heat after Hurricane Gustav. Having suffered both power outages in extreme heat and cold, give me the cold every time. At least I can sleep in the cold.

Just saw they added two more deaths in Panola County, that takes it up to 23 dead due to the winter storm and cold. That’s pretty astounding.

I know this situation is probably an anomaly, but...
Invest in a Generac if you can.
I just don’t see how $10k+ and a maintenance contract is worth it unless your power goes out several times a year/for days at a time. A $1000 portable generator, hooked to propane or natural gas, is as far as i’d go. Of course i don’t understand why people buy $80k SUVs and $5 cups of coffee, so there’s that.

Depends on your utility company. Theres an area in western Desoto County that is serviced by Coahoma Electric that lose power if there’s a stiff breeze.

I guess growing up in a very rural area and power going out all the time, it just doesn’t seem like a necessary expense, unless needed for home medical equipment. But then again, i see folks who can’t afford it getting way upside in vehicles, spending crazy money on vacations and kid’s sports, and blowing money on many other unnecessary expenses. I don’t understand it, i’m probably just a dinosaur.
