I took my teenager last year, and we went mostly casual and relaxed and loved the following places:

All Purpose - Shaw (pizza and some other really good dang food)

Tune Inn - just down from the capitol (just a good smash burger)

Ted's Bulletin (great breakfast)

When we go back, we will hit some fancier places......down by the Navy yard is a cool area as well
This one is in the Navy Yard and right by the Nats stadium, thought it was fantastic. I didn't have the crab cakes but I bet they'll eat.

Madea's Monster Crabs Cakes - It's a greasy looking food truck. Several of them around town, but they are some kind of fine.

I would bet there's one on the Mall this week at the 250th Celebration Party. If not check around Union Station.

Le Diplomat for brunch

Old Ebbitt use to be the place for crab cakes, and may still be
I had Old Ebbitt during spring break and those crab cakes were legit. We also ate at Hamilton which is nearby, may be on the opposite side of the same block, it was really good as well.

Son is marching in parade on Saturday, so an entire 3 insanely packed schedule of days.

Old Ebbit Grill is really good but not had crabcakes
Hanks Oyster Bar and Rappahannock - both at the Wharf are really good spots.
Martins Tavern in Georgetown has some great crab cakes and overall great food and atmosphere.

Like everyone has said Old Ebbit is the place to go for crab cakes. My neighbors across the street from us asked where to eat when they went to DC and I told them Old Ebbit and they ended up eating there two or three different times.

You and two other people independently all recommended it to us within 24 hours of each other while we were up there. You were not incorrect.

If fishing is your thing there's a long rectangular pond near the Lincoln Memorial.
lol I know right they just couldn’t leave well enough alone, I remember standing there at the reflecting pool when it was just the way it was supposed to be back in the 90s. Enjoying the Lincoln Memorial and the rest of the cities attractions. I wish I could remember the name of the incredible restaurant we went out to with some of the highest ups, dress code and all that. We were there on a free vacation/my grandfather was at the top of Boll weevil eradication board so it doubled as a vacation. We put an end to those Weevils though. I’ve got to ask my grandmother tomorrow what that place was called. Been back since but didn’t meet the president this or any politicians this time nor did I want to.

We’re leaving tomorrow to do DC and Philly for the 250th. I’m surprised no one has mentioned that the Nationals host the Pirates this weekend. We’re going to the game on Saturday and hopefully Jake plays and goes off…

Don't look now but he's currently tied for the team lead in BA. Too bad the Pirates are *** as usual.

Things to do while in the DC area not crab cake or bar scene related:

My # 1 is Arlington - Arlington exists to be visited. The rows of identical white headstones, the eternal flame, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—these are memorials designed to ensure we remember. Walking among them isn’t tourism. It’s the act of remembering that gives their sacrifice meaning.

My # 2 is Holocaust Museum - I am particularly interested because my father was the first person to open a Concentration Camp's gate and a POW camp gate. He saw things that haunted him until his death at age 96 during Covid. He once made me promise to never let anyone tell me the Holocaust didn't happen.

If you don't come away from those two events with a different perspective on things then you may not have a soul.

My # 3 is broad includes all the sites. Do as many sites as possible, some of my highlights were: Smithsonian, Veitnam, WWII and War Memorials, White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Ford's Theater etc... I missed one that I plan on going back to see if I ever go back and it's the Native American Museum. I regret not walking back down there. It was getting late and I was running out of time and may have only had a few minutes in there but I wish I had gone.

I say every American should make this trip.
