I believe the main reason your D was so good last year was because of your DL. Your DBs are still good, but good DBs can't carry a defense like a good DL can.

I have seen him play, he is in tip top shape and is quick as hell. Playing ball in South Florida is not easy.
His adjustment to SEC will not take as long as most Freshman. He could make an impact.

Coaches are notorious about promoting a lesser player to the first string for a few reasons.
1) To reward the player for his hard work
2) To show other players on the team that positions are earned not given
3) To piss off the player who lost his position so that he will try harder
4) The coach may see that the starter is slacking and wants to light a fire under his ***.

From experience, I have never worked so hard in my life the week before the game when the coach told us that 3 people(including myself) were in the running for starting safety.

JUST A REMINDER: Ducre started one game last year. Croom did this to show Dixon to either step up or step aside.</p>

we were last in the SEC in sacks last year. It's not like our DBs were good just because we got such a great pass rush. They were good because they were just damn good. </p>

.....it'll be good, but not great and certainly won't create as many turnovers or points off tornovers as last year. I think our success or failure this year will come down to simply playing solid defense and (hopefully) adding a much improved offense to the mix.

For the record, the only reason I can see a smaller DE is the speed factor. I've been getting the impression that Harbison wants to get a lot more aggressive, especially on 3rd downs, than we were the last few years.

I'm not too worried about this. We have Holmes and Tim Bailey who are both experienced and have played pretty well in the past. We also recruited a glut of DE's- Ferguson obviously, Nick Bell, Shane McCardell, Devin Jones, and maybe even Stiggers (assuming he gets into school, but I think he will.) So, it stands to reason that at least two of those guys were going to see some playing time. We also have Charles Burns, although I have no idea how healthy he is. I see him more of a reserve anyway.

When this is pulled at MState, the player supposedly getting his fire lit usually quits. When we recruit a talented player to the Bulldogs, they usually come with a sense of entitlement. So, if you try something like "motivating them", "making them work", "don't let them do drugs", "don't let them rob a pizza delivery man at knifepoint", etc., they'll usually quit.</p>

With defensive linemen like Kevin Sluder, Conner Stephens, Ellis Wyms, Toby Golliday, Willie Blade, Alvin McKinley, and Dorsett Davis (I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody), we could rotate at will (and we did) and not lose anything.

Of course, our DBs were no slouches either... Fred Smoot and Robert Bean on the same team that year.

And add Barrin Simpson at LB and Ashley Cooper going pretty much wherever he wanted......

Holy crap, that was a fun defense to watch.</p>

We have a new Defensive Coordinator. I am not sure what his plan of attack will be, but it should not be much different than Ellis's (or is it?)

If we get hurt up front we have enough LB's to play a 3-4 scheme.

We have flexibility in our Defense, I am not worried about them. I am worried about scoring points.</p>

Yeah, I saw on the recruiting list that Sean Ferguson was 203 last spring, which isn't even big enough for a linebacker. That's probably why the florida schools let him get away. But hopefully his quickness will let him be effective in pass rush situations. Hard to believe an underweight true frosh starts at DE in game 1 though, that is slightly concerning.
