Where did this go wrong? I can solely base this season downfall on the defense....the offense, with the exception of the PC game, did its job....the D-Line and LB's just didn't dominate as they have in years past...McClurge was my teams MVP, he didn't leave the field, and they probably hurt him in the 4th quarter...3 Sophs were starting on defense at the end....Kennedy showed flashes of brilliance but never took control like I hoped he would...this team could very easily have been 8-1, but the defense didn't step up when needed, and God I would love to have that fumble against SR that got returned for a TD back...we would be in the playoffs.....but the future looks bright...lot of players back....hopefully Thomas plays his senior year....Freshman had a great year and Dutton I hear did well as the Soph QB before the injury....we'll be back boys, but this really was a heartbreaking year because they were too talented to finish 4-5...last observation, and I know kids grow, teams get transfer students and have kids transfer out, but MC dominated SR and BR at the lower levels with these classes, and then it's an entirely different team on Varsity...should some coaching changes be made on the Varsity level, and I don't mean Frank or Dave Lenti, but with the support staff....maybe some younger guys more familiar with the spread offense....

Carmel will be way better next year but LA and Rice have some solid returning players and 2 very good Sophomore classes coming up too.

Rice sophomores beat MC sophomores
The sophomore class at Rice haven't lost a game in two years and that was with 4 sophomores up on varsity this year

MC sophs are very good class. 6 up this year. Losing Griffith cost them 2 games. Bottom line, Nobody stepped up on D. Just one of those years. Cupboard is full. Will be back next year.

Dean - I didn't count a lot of Soph starters though. Saw 2 that rotated in. LA has 1 Soph starter and 1 that got solid time. Rice had OKeefe/Sullivan regular starters, Waryko and Means start a couple of games. Rita had 2 Soph starters and another up

They did beat them in a great game in overtime, MC had 7 Sophs on Varsity and Dutton didn't play that game, not taking anything away from BR, thats a great class, look out for them in 2018...they will have have to mother the load next season because the juniors at BR now don't have half the talent as the Sophs do.

Dominic Barbosa got a lot of starts on the D-Line...Eddie McGee (CB) and Cade Walsh (OLB) started the last 3 games, Billingsley rotated in at TE and WR all season, and Ross Valenti got some playing time early at MLB but was injured, I think he will be good. Didn't see Kyle Davis with too many carries but he was up as a Soph too and he looked really good carrying the ball as a Freshman. Rias carried the load on the Soph team, him a Davis will be a good backfield combo with #13 next year.

Freshman QB looked really good...really strong defense....#55, #9, #8, #3, #11 all strong on Defense....Jordan Lynch little bro will be at MC next year...not as big as Jordan yet, but very fast, will be great running the veer and he has a good teacher! I love the veer too and it works, great for the clock, our offense scored 30 points a game, we just let up 35 and that has to change...

I love bean, he's a leader and football player.
Both Sullivan and bean need to be on the field but I think they should be on the defense

Bean the current Soph is pretty tough too. Sullivan the Jr might be better suited to WR or DB.
Disagree I think Sullivan needs to be at qb next year. they lose a lot of skills and speed with smalling, Houston valladay and lacy all being seniors. they have some oline man coming back along with O'Keefe who will be playing a lot of hback and lead blocking Sullivan is a difference maker with his legs and could help take presure off the young skill by making defenses respect his running ability.

MCs Frosh are very very good - granted the L to LA but MC and LA were clearly the best Frosh teams this year

Wow if thats true (LA Frosh best in Frosh CCL Waubonsie Valley Frosh might be the real deal in a couple of years. They beat the Loyola Frosh pretty convincingly a few weeks back in a non conference game. The concern I have in trying to gauge underclass moving to varsity is that there are so many variables
* kids move out of state
* kids move in state
* kids transfer away- get recruited away ;). Sorry teasing on that one
* kids transfer in.
* kids plateau and don't grow anymore
* kids that were non factors as Frosh grow 8 inches in two years and add 90 pounds.
* etc etc etc.

Did you see Sullivan during scrub time?
He couldn't complete a pass. Bean would be better suited for what you just described

Very interested to see the Rice freshman being coached by Lyons on the sophomore level next year. A lot of talent

They did look good. Learning curve for new Frosh coach may have hurt results but they seem to have played Loyola tough to end season. Lyons should work out some kinks and physically they have some guys that should start as sophs on varsity again.

Bean is your starter next year and the frosh may start as a junior and move Bean to an athletic spot on the field at that time.

The freshman has a huge arm.

Never saw the junior QB

The Rice fans are really taking the Naz fan strategy and running with it. A thread about the future of the MC program has turned into a discussion on the four year QB depth chart for Rice. Well played fellas.

Feel free to Expand. Cheap shot flybys are as cowardly as it gets
It's not a cheap shot, nor a "flyby." I don't even like MC but you criticize the coaching staff every chance you get on threads mentioning MC. So interesting you call that cowardly, but not passive aggressive comments like your own.

Rice could be 9-0 or 0-9 dependent upon their QB as they cannot rely on their defensive hence the derailing and how that may impact MC moving forward.

MC seems to have the talent for annual long runs in 7A. Heck if they made it this year they could have had deep run.

If Thomas is not the QB next year MC will have to find one and that like Rice could be a problem hence where this thread moved to. The sophomore from LT looked like he could play the part but that position takes a beating. This assumes MC does not divert too much from the veer.

Prior to this year MC would win with their defense, I am not certain what happened this year but things happen. Three years ago MC was a healthy LA QB away from missing the playoffs.

The strength of LA and Rice seem to have hurt MC a little and has caused MC to come back to the pack somewhat.

All MC needs to do is get in and they will go deep in 7A.

Getting back on track - I would think that Dutton should get the call at QB at MC - ideally Thomas will play again and not forego Senior year to focus solely on baseball (which is a reality if he's getting drafted in top 3 rounds). That would allow Thomas to move back to flanker/scat back and even DB. MC still loses quite a bit of talent of this current team which seems to have underperformed this year (which hey every 30 years you get one of those odd ones). MC should go 7-2 and perhaps even 8-1 next year.

MC really doesn't lose too much to be honest. Key people back next year on O line: Verdis Brown and Cooper, Mendiola was up as soph. Davis up as soph I am thinking he and Rias in backfield. Billingsley up as soph at TE along with Wilkins.

Defense: Barbosa back played a ton as soph, I really liked Outlar on soph team. Valenti up as soph ILB and they brought Walker up for PC game at hybrid as soph. Walsh also as soph late in year. Terry Taylor back at weak OLB. McGee soph at corner back. Weathers played as junior. Love both safeties on soph team Brooks and Gutter.

Its time to hit the panic button if you are MC. You can have all the payers you want coming back but they were 0-4 in conference this year, 0-4. They have lost their identity or are trying to keep some form off it and its not working. Like most everyone else (some worst than others) their defense has not caught up to spread offenses. The veer needs a good defense, its not geared towards putting points on the board quickly so when you get down its hard to comeback. The weird hybrid spread/veer offense they ran against Rice was so uncomfortable to watch.

If they solve the QB problem they will be fine. The veer keeps the defense off the field and that was the issue they had this year. Butkus was ideal for that and they need to find that to get through the CCL Blue. In 7A this year they go to the quarters and most likely the semis rather easily.

they finally put their best athlete at QB but their defense still gave up 30 points against most of the CCL blue teams. The times are changing, the game is changing and MC is at a crossroads. We all know Frankie boy wont admit it but hes at a lost with what to do offensively.
7A is no 8A, we all know that but guess what its nice to think they would be in the semis but they wont even have a shot at it.

Here is the real questions that this thread should be about.
Will the ole boy coach Frankie Boy put his ego aside and change his offense?

Why would he change the offense?? 49, 56, 28, 28, 28, 42, 56, 23....those were the points MC put up against their first 8 opponents until they hit a flat tire against PC...you put up those points against teams at MC, they should be 8-1 and would have in past years...so the veer is fine my friend, even with the QB shuffle...They put up 42 vs. BR, even with the unorthodox offense, 28 vs. SR and LA and they went 0-3...can't happen, problem is with the defense, and as stated their inability to stop the spread, so changes need to be made on defense because they have the athletes to do it.

Rogers, #45 played a ton, he will be back...Soph Cade Walsh started 4 games at OLB, so the linebackers should be Taylor, Rogers, Valenti and Walsh....#13, the RB with the Greek name I don't recall, will be back in the backfield with Davis and Rias....talent is there, just need to really get the Defense back on track. Just need to play with heart.
