Since we have gone through this more recently and more often than you, I thought I'd take this opportunity to allay some of your fears and send a giant empathy wave your way. First, please understand that coaches do not operate in a vacuum. They usually have input from agents, wives, parents, etc. The fact that they worked briefly with your AD does not been that they are Brokeback Buddies and will drop everything and move 2400 miles away. This says nothing about you or your school, no matter how much fun I make of you. It is, in fact, a good job.

Second, the bigger problem that you are having right now has to do with impending resignations, not this year's. There is reason to believe that Colorado, California, and Iowa are likely to be open next year. If you are thinking about staying closer to your family, these are more attractive and probably are areas to which you already have some recruiting ties. Who knew that ND would hold on the Weis. If they had sacked him, there would have been a bit of a domino effect that would have opened a few other positions. While this might not have given you Petersen, there would have been a good deal more movement in the coaching ranks among head guys as opposed to coordinators.

Third, fanboards have really, REALLY changed the search landscape. Even as recently as seven or eight years ago, a search could slink through the night in private. Since somebody decided to enrich no-talent hacks like Gene, Yancy, and Chuck, there has been huge downturn in the journalistic standards for releasing information to the public. I am quite sure that GB is unhappy that the Petersen courtship even hit the light. Your AD got a decent hire for baseball, I do not assume he will suddenly do worse for football. Let the man do his job.

Bottomline? You guys will get a fairly-good guy with head-coaching or D1A coordinator experience. You will struggle next season, mostly because of the quarterback situation, but I am supposing that whomever you bring in will create enough initial energy that your W/L will look better and you will not be enduring another ***-kicking from us (we will be having our own growing pains).

Chill. Enjoy the holiday season. You will have a new coach in two or three days and it might even be Petersen.

A fan of USC and Ole Miss, you embody the only things that are wrong with college football. How hard was it to pay for a seat on the bandwagon?

As far as paying tuition, I recall my father paying money to Ole Miss in the far distant past, but I was on fellowship at USC and the only thing that I paid for there was my parking permit.

ultimately, SC gets who they want and everybody else scraps for the rest. They also struggle with keeping athletes eligible. There was a decent rumor circulating that he would have taken ND if it had vacated.
