Thanks for making me forget all about the band version of the dog pound rock from 2009.

PS: this year's Halloween halftime was pretty cool.

Sincerely,

If there should happen to come open the position of Assistant Band Director For Common Sense In Music Selection, let me know so I can apply.

I would promise to only allow you to play awesome music going forward, and never again would you have to stand on your arch-rival's home field and endure the embarassment of having to play 17ing Britney Spears or having to do the 17ing Macarena.

EDIT: or godawful Billy Ray Cyrus....I remembered there was another leg to the ****-tastic trifecta, but I forgot what it was. I guarantee in another ten years, that damn woman will have the band out there playing Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.

... and so does the rest of the band. We would have rather done queen. <div>

....and occasionally, the Queen show would just be Bohemian Rhapsody, start-to-finish, without any of the stupid edits. Just like Freddie wrote it.

Ditto with Come Sail Away.

By the way, if you all hate it, you should all agree to not do it. What's she going to do, kick you all out? Strike, baby, strike!

Their best show ever was the Styx show in 2001 and then they did Queen this year.

They did Fat Bottomed Girls with girls riding around on bikes during the halftime show.

of connecting with the fans. Yes, the Britney Spears show was lame, but by God, every time ya'll did that show, every woman around me that was 26 and under was singing along with it. So there's something to be said for that.

The Halloween show was the best. I loved it when people were yelling "Do Thriller!" from the stands.

...and who vocifeously defended the practice to me via email (which was really weird).

Goes without saying, but we do appreciate the band members, we just hate the fools running the show.

It was a lot more fun for both the crowd and the band during that show, and I don't see any reason we can't do it next year. Even if it means only doing a few sets the entire show.

You could do homecoming, Halloween, and the Patriotic Show. Out of a typical seven game football season, that's almost half the shows right there. Those are all easy- especially homecoming. Then you could do one traditional halftime show of Queen or whatever, and make it really good, instead of doing two. It would allow the band to focus more resources on props and stuff like that. It would also maximize time if the Maroon Band only practices one hour.

I don't see time really being an issue with learning shows. We literally learned the drill to the patriotic show in about three days. When we were on a tight schedule earlier in the season, we compensated by having Friday and Saturday rehearsals. I feel that a lot of the uncleanliness of our show comes from our drill style. Also, the shows usually are great in practice when we have a giant grid warn in, but on Scott Field, the only thing we really can rely on is eyeballing the 4 steps. That's why the national anthem block always looks junky from the student section. We're just not comfortable marching on surfaces that aren't our own practice field.<div>
</div><div>To apply that to your point, if we switched to doing one main show every year, it wouldn't do much outside of constrain the diversity of shows we can perform each season. Besides, who can give up Brittney Spears and the Backstreet Boys? I mean, really.</div>

Just cutting the size of the band from ~300 to ~200 would be good, if we got rid of the 100 laziest, most apathetic members. Maybe a double whammy by raising weekly practice time from 4 to 6 hours. That would do wonders and probably not cut down much at all on the sound impact either.

we very rarely did a Sat. rehearsal.

If you feel that the surface is the problem, the solution is simple. Get the athletic dept. to let ya'll use Scott Field one day a week.

When I was in the band, we had a problem marching because we had people hung over from Friday night, or still drunk.

LOL I was one of those people. That Thriller thing was one of the coolest things I've ever seen out of the FMB.

Back in Sills' day, the band had permission to "grid" the actual field on the day of the game. They had a rope that went sideline to sideline, with a mark every 2 steps. The managers would put that rope on the yard line and spray paint a white, 1-inch dash at every 2-step interval. The did this on every yard line, all the way down the field. The little dashes were invisible to cameras and the crowd, but on the field you could see the grid easily.

Not everyone bothered to pay attention, but if you did, it was pretty easy to position yourself accurately and get the lines almost perfectly straight. Even after 2 quarters of play, most of the dashes were still visible if you stood on the field.

I doubt they let the band do that anymore... too bad.

from a white guy... Also updating the uni's would be nice and leave off the old logo. Of topic but someone please paint the new logo on the Palmerio.
