Ron Polk is an *******. He had a window to come back and say sorry, but if he comes back now and says sorry it just looks like he's kissing *** so no one pisses on his legacy. Cohen could surpass Polk as the greatest coach in MSU history with 2 more wins. 17 Polk. He had his chance. He can go hit on 19 year olds in the Cape Cod league and get his due 30 years from now.

Shouldn't have **** on the fans when he retired.

Cohen has already surpassed Polk in my opinion.
Not yet. Cohen could go 0-2. That's one trip and swept in one championship series.

Polk built this program, tore it down, came back, gave us some credibility, **** on MSU, and left not giving a **** and dragging every MSU fan through the mud. I can't stand the guy. Still the best in MSU history to this point. I'll give him that.

He's missed his chance of being apart of the celebration though. If he comes to the party I hope Cohen tells him to suck his dick.

Not yet. Polk's legacy will be a lot more kind than 2013 fans. Guy deserves little to no credit for this team.

Polk deserves everything flung in his direction.

Polk built this program.

Polk took over a very, very good baseball program with a fanbase that was already pretty bigtime, lounges already in place, etc -- and he benefited from MSU CARING about college baseball at a time when no one else did...

Not arguing. Anyone who threatens to take his name off the stadium because he doesn't get his way and doesn't should get it ripped off out of principal

It`s funny Polk`s legacy at MSU will always be debated by us MSU folk but his legacy to the SEC is one of kinda being the father of modern SEC baseball as we know it. He woke the SEC up to the fact that baseball could generate excitement and more importantly income and soon after that big stadiums, big crowds and national titles started flowing. Polk II was a huge mistake and we paid dearly as did Polk`s legacy. Shame on us for ever letting it happen.

THIS sums it up. Time heals all wounds. There's no point in even bringing the topic of this thread up. We're on the cusp of making history, let's just enjoy it!

My sweet, gray-haired old mother, who never has a bad thing to say about anybody, told me that ron polk was a bitter old man trying to cling on to something he had no right to. If my mother thinks Ron Polk is an *******, who am I to argue?

Polk put Mississippi State baseball and SEC baseball on the map. He showed us what we are capable of. He raised our expectations. He brought our current head coach here to play baseball.

Polk deserves a hell of a lot of credit for where we are now.

Disagree. He changed Mississippi State baseball, SEC baseball, and nationwide baseball. He showed his *** in the end but he actually did do good for our program. Not saying he is in anyway responsible for this year's team because he isn't directly but there is no way that you can say that he is a "scab" or however you want to phrase it on our team. If you were posting here in the 90's-early 00's he would be a god

I won't let it go in 500 years. What he did and tried to do to our program is unforgivable. But it is in the past now. We've gone further than we've ever gone before and our program is finally where it should be.

Almost. Cohen has done tons more than Polk in many ways. We actually have a talented, fun team to watch that has its own identity. This includes player attitudes, unique tactics (e.g., focus on bullpen, etc.) Cohen really has done a lot for us beyond just winning. But for him to have truly surpassed Polk on every level, in my opinion, I'm gonna need to see Cohen have a complete meltdown on an ump. Polk mastered that craft. Other than that, team Cohen.

Upon Cohen mastering umpire slaying, then we tell Polk to 17 off**

Hey morons, we have Cohen BECAUSE Ron Polk was our coach!

Why do you think Cohen wanted to come to MSU and return as it's head coach? He came to us to play for Ron Polk and the legendary program Polk largely built. So he made some mistake in the end, mostly due to his sense of loyalty to Raffo, to whom he'd promised would get his turn. Polk has always been known to be a man of his word, and is still loved and respected to this day by friend and foe alike.

You 17ers who want to bash him now for the mistakes of the past surely do not know who to read a ledger. In the grand scheme, Ron Polk was and is a huge winner in the annals of Mississippi State sports. He gave us something to be proud of at a time when there was very little else to be proud of. We may have sucked at football and basketball, but we were damn-well feared and respected in baseball under Ron Polk. I, for one, will forever be grateful to the man for what he did for our university.

At the time he was successful. no other team in the conference cared much for baseball. As soon as they started caring, his star started declining.

^^^ This.....

It's past the point of Polk hate. It's over and done with. Polk II was a mistake, and you can blame Templeton for that. But if it hadn't happened, we wouldn't have gotten Cohen (who many of you hypocrites chastised to no end up until this year).

So in the end, our fanbase really doesn't know what it wants. The knowledgeable fans know what's up, but we are the minority.

Polk loved the game and loved promoting it. We gave him the perfect venue to do that. He was never as good a coach as he was promoter and spokesman for the game of college baseball. MSU benefited from what he did well and came up short (no natty) where he came up short. I personally had a ball (most of the time) during Polk I but knew Polk II would be a disaster....and it was.

I was extremely critical of Polk when he tried to get involved in the coaching search, thought we needed to get rid of him before he retired, and thought we made a mistake when we brought him back, but Polk knew how to coach baseball. That wasn't his problem. He simply didn't recruit the way you had to recruit to win at the highest level as college baseball became more competitive.

Really good post. I always thought the aura of MSU baseball was bigger than the on the field results/tradition. The stadium/LFL and all was the real tradition, because, as we've been reminded over and over the past week, we've never won more than 2 games in Omaha. Polk was a good coach, not a great one, in my opinion. Back in his day he recruited very well, and stands to reason he should have as well as he promoted the game and got attention in Starkville. Polk II did not.

Yes, people routinely forget what Paul Gregory did for this program and that he won SEC titles and took us to our first CWS.

More than likely we would have gotten Manieri had we not hired Polk II. And after Manieri left for LSU, we would have gotten Cohen at that point.

I don't think Manieri would have ever left Starkville for LSU. MSU was his dream job at the time.

It is really nice to read "third party" stories that elevate our program more...

Than the local hacks that cover our sports on a local basis. Perhaps it's because the Omaha writer isn't given orders to play down MSU.
