It's pretty well much documented that DE is a huge issue for our defense - so how did we end up with the situation we have? Here's what we recruited at the position over the years that

'08 - McCardell, Stigers, Ferguson, Bell, Gainous

'09 - McPhee, McKenzie, Cox

'10 - Crawford (SMU), Harrison-Gay, Eulls

'11 - Harris, Smith

I'm trying to think of an impact player that we missed on that we can look back on and say was a huge miss. We missed on Dorsey and C. Thompson in '10 but neither has shown much of anythign yet.

Ferguson has been a serviceable player, but that's about it. Stigers is decent depth but never really developed into anything beyond that. McCardell is probably my biggest disappointment b/c I can't for the life of me figure out why a guy with his speed cannot be a speed rush guy on 3rd and long and blow by a tackle 40% of the time. We all know about Bell, but while he was starting I have to say that I didn't see him being an impact player.

McPhee lived up to much of the hype and despite being doubled teams alot did make a fair amount of plays and got pressure on the QB even though his sack numbers weren't huge. Cox grew and moved inside which initially was disappointing to me b/c I was hoping he could be our dominat DE. McKenzie had the reputation of being a practice monster his freshman year but then quit early last year after the AU game.

So now we're asking a RFr in Eulls to start which you never want to do and it seems the coaching staff is not sure if he's a DE or DT since he practiced a lot at both. I get the feeling he might be a better DT over time and will move there if we land Autry. I have no idea what we have in Harrison-Gay.

No clue on the true freshman or how bright we think their future is.

But given this and how important a position this is, heck I'd try to sign 5 DE's this year. overall it's been our Achilles heal for years as the only high level DE's we've had were positional converts Willie Evans and Titus Brown. We've got enough depth at a lot of position where we could spend more of this recruiting class trying to solve that problem.

We've got Brown and Bell committed so far but Bell may be a OLB. Really need to find a way to get Ward and Autry as well and hopefully they live up to the hype.

His name isn't coming to me at the moment, but we missed on the JUCO DE out of Hinds CC last year. He ended up at Texas Tech.

an impact DE out of high school since Titus Brown in '04 and that was luck.Titus was a lightly recruited LB that developed into aDE. The two guys we signed last year were lightly recruited andhave a lot of work to do in the weight room.

Channing Ward is going to be a fight to the end. Denico Autry lists us 3rd behind UT and Bama.

Also missed on Barron Dixon and Devaunte Sigler (who was playing for Auburn, but on the interior I think). There really just havent been that many impact DE's coming out of Mississippi lately (though we did miss on C. Thompson), which has hurt us, but it still isnt an excuse for what we have done at the position. <div>
</div><div>The easy answer is JUCO to make up for the lack of stars in Mississippi, and we did well with McPhee but missed big with Mackey (FWIW, he had 4 tackles in Tech's first game - edited to add that I just saw that about the collapsed lung - that sucks). Denico Autry would be a big get this year, but I dont know how good we are looking there. </div><div>
</div><div>Channing Ward is the first big name in a while - maybe the top guy since Q. Groves. He would be a huge get. AJ Jefferson wouldn't hurt either. I am still a little surprised that Deonte Skinner never developed into a DE. </div><div>
</div><div>This has been a problem for a long time and it is now starting to show up big time. </div>

roster. Mullen is a good coach, but he is going to have trouble winning consistently if he doesn't start bringing in some better players. I think we will be solid at LB for the next few years, but we are going to lose A Lot of guys in the secondary over the next two years. When Banks, Broomfield and Slay leave after next year, we are going to be in trouble at CB.

This goes for everywhere along the DL.

We have Taveze Calhoun on campus.<div>
</div><div>Also, we have about 4/5 commits that could play CB.</div><div>Will Redmond has offers from everyone. Also, Jay Hughes started off at CB and might move back. He has to play safety this year because we kicked Thames off.</div><div>And that will the year when Justin Cox gets out of JUCO.</div><div></div>

we really really need him but I've seen no indications that we lead for him and usually if we don't lead early that's a bad sign for us. We tend to lose big name guys toward the end not turn them around to us.

but I think it would have made a lot of sense to redshirt Slay this season.

We have Banks and Broomfield for another year. We should be able to re-sign Cox out of Juco where he has 3 INT's thru 2 games. Will Redmond is a greatprospect. But yeah, our recruiting the last 2 years just won't cut it. I love Mullen's confidence, but maybe he thinks he can go out and sign anyone and make him a good player. I don't know. Bobby Bowden's been on the radio a lot this week and all he keeps saying is recruit, recruit, recruit.

<span>I guess he may have been more LB than DE, but he sure could wreak havoc in the backfield.

Warning: this video may bring back some very good memories.

Bell would be at one end and doing solid work.

As for the other end, it ought to be McKenzie. I think he would've been a special player at some point in his career, maybe even this year.

I still think we should be playing Devin Jones at DE this year. He wouldn't be a threat as a pass rusher, but he could at least stop the run. Losing McKenzie, Carmon, Howie and Bell off of the DL within a span of two years is really hard to recover from. Losing Barron Dixon hurt last year. We needed him.

We signed a lot of guys who were projects the last several years, and it is going to come back to bite us. I hate to write off young players, but if Harrison-Gay and Virges can't find a way onto the field this year, I don't see them ever being starters along the DL.

As far as the secondary goes, I'm not overly high on Hughes or Love. They may develop into great players, but they have a long ways to go. It would have been nice to have Thames this year.

We haven't lost many players due to attrition, but the ones we have lost were all at positions we could ill afford to lose them at. Getting Nick James in school is a must, and so is landing Quay. We need to sign three DTs this year (if the numbers weren't tight, I would sign four) and at least four or five ends. I would be tempted to sign 10 DL this year.

It will be interesting to see how our young OL turn out. A lot of them are projects, but I trust Hevesy and Balis. Clausell and Day will be good in time, but we have to see about the rest. I've seen nothing out of Damien Robinson that makes me believe he will ever be a starter in the SEC.

What is I told you 3 years ago that Corey Broomfield would start for us for 3 years?

Jonathan Banks was a safety.
