Well I guess this answers the questions about changing the defensive scheme:

<font size="2"><font face="Georgia"><font size="2"><font face="Georgia">Dan Mullen, the team's head coach, said both personnel and scheme changes could be part of the menu this week as State (1-1, 0-1 SEC) prepares Vanderbilt (1-1, 0-1). But, "we're not going to go around and make wholesale changes and scrap our defensive scheme," Mullen said.</font></font></font></font>

<font face="georgia, palatino" size="2">"I thought Pernell (McPhee) played halfway decent and got some rush at times," Mullen said. "The other guys, we've got to create a little bit more pass rush and also create some opportunities for them to be able to get after the passer. <span style="font-weight: bold;">We got a little conservative at times with a three-man rush and we weren't getting a lot of pressure. We have to put our guys in better position to put pressure on our quarterback."

I guess watching the game on T.V. was worse than there game film! I sure hope Mullen is just doing "coach speak" cause if we keep a 3 man front look out 1 and 11.

<font face="Georgia" size="2"><font face="Georgia" size="2">Mullen's first impressions of QB Chris Relf: "(He) was very remedial in his knowledge of the quarterback position and reading coverages and defenses, recognizing those things. I thought he was very erratic in throwing the football. He never threw the ball the same twice in a row. He had no form to his throw. He'd just grab it and throw it however he was. Chris has really worked hard to learn his game."</font></font>
<font face="Georgia" size="2"> Very remedial in his knowledge? Is he just trying to find something good to say and not doing a very good job?</font>

It's refreshing to hear the coaches take responsibility instead of saying, "there's nothing wrong with our schemes" or "as long as I'm here, we are going to run this offense" or "I will quit before I fire any assistant coaches."

Chris was very raw when Mullen got here. I thought we all knew that.

Should we make changes? Clearly. Should we scrap an entire defense? That would be dumb after only two games.

He can be a good player but is playing out of position. If he is going to be playing he needs to play the traditional strong safety position. He could have played dog safety in JLD scheme but cannot play the other deep half of the field in cover 2.

is so worried about our defense. We have SWAT returning and Riek was just declared eligible. Plus, our perimeter guys will have another year's experience. I can understand that people might be a little concerned about Ravern and Augustus, but I think we have enough pieces in place to have a tough D.

The entire spring, fall, and the J-State game we played a 4-3. We decided to scrap all of that work and go with the 3-3-5 with soft zone coverage in the secondary.

<font face="Georgia" size="2"> Torbush said there will be changes to the defensive scheme to fix what went wrong, emphasize the holes that were presented and adapt to what he expects from the Commodores. "I doubt very seriously if there will be any starters changed," Torbush said. "I think the guys that were in there are the guys that we need in there. We just need to make plays</font>

Let's put it this way, when you run a 3-man front you better have a dominant down lineman who can get a push, we don't. Also, when you're Lb'ers are in a "read and react" which ours were, they get caught up in the ball fake and when teams have speedy backs like Auburn they run away from folks. Just like the spread offense you gotta have an aggressive defense to play in a speed game! I'm not for making wholesale changes nor I'm I in favor of scraping our defensive scheme. I'm for not having your base defense with a 3-man front and read and react defense. Torbush didn't make any changes, you don't win if you can't make changes on the fly and that is offense as well as defense.

He spent a lot of time being double-teamed and still pushed those 2 guys steadily backwards towards the QB.
