So I was looking at defensive stats for us through 9 games this year and comparing them to previous years. We are now giving up 458 yards per game. We actually give up 6.74 yards per play. We are rated #104 in total yards given up per game. For point of comparison, Dave Cohen's 2013 Rutgers defense gave up 412 yards per game. We've given up 2,068 yards in the last 4 games. Points against is even more disturbing. We are now 110th in the country giving up 35.7 points. 2013 we gave up 29.8. Literally every week, I see that the opposing QB or running back or offense has set some kind of record.

Now why compare our defense this year to 2013. I think we all look back to that year as the real break from Schiano on defense with Rob Smith gone. Our defense has gotten worse every year. Cohen got fired for futility. Flood brought in his own man in Rossi. Kyle Flood has to take ownership of this defense and the blame falls on him. We are utterly putrid on defense. I really don't want to hear about who is or isn't playing. Fact is all the problems have happened under his watch. All of the personnel is his responsibility. All of the recruiting is on him now. He is the constant in all of this.

Oh yea, and the offense is also a mess. But that's for another thread.

Well I knew it was bad and figured it was a good time to take a look at things. Amazing when you think back to how badly we viewed things in 2013 under Cohen and now how much worse we actually are. We are so poorly coached. I don't believe we are devoid of talent. For example, we continually let WR get off the line without getting hands on them, even down by the goal line. The first TD by Michigan to Chesson was typical for this defense. Easy release off line. Head to the middle of the field. Safety backpedals to 6 yards in the end zone. No LB help from underneath. Easy TD. We play so soft on defense. For all of Flood's talk of being a tough Northeastern team playing smash mouth football, we don't play like it at all.
