Laster is big, did not seem to play instinctively. Not slow for his size, but not quick either. Seems to be still adjusting. Probably needs to play in the middle. I don't think any of our inside defenders played very well in the spring game. I expect Love and Laster to be better in the fall.
Thanks Blue. The instinct thing is what I was looking for. At this level, instinct better be there. Speed is just too great to have to think much.

Yep, consider this...of the likely 8 LBs in the 2-deep, 6 haven't played a down of SEC football.
In the 3-4 defense if your DL cant control the LoS, it doesn't matter how big, or fast or athletic your LB are.

Making a bunch of tackles 7 yards downfield just loses games. DL is the key for UK to be a successful team as long as they play a 3-4 defense. If you control the DL you win games in the SEC. Simple if you think about it.

I agree whole heartedly about running the 3/4. It hasn't worked for 3 years and now we are going on year 4. Been reading for years now if we can land some good DL then that 3/4 will prove how valuable it is. then I read in other threads that we have signed outstanding talent across the DL as it shows since they are pros.
Well what is it? Don't have the talent or do we have the talent?

Actually, I thought the DL job in a 3/4 was mostly just to eat up blockers and let the LBs make the play. Thought the biggest keys were great LB play and a good NT who can eat up two blockers.

Yep. They are supposed to get control of the ol and then peak on their key. Then when they know where the play is going they shed the block and try to make a play.
