The Patriots have trimmed down their cornerback competition.
Alfonzo Dennard was released this morning, a league source confirmed to the Herald after the move was first reported by the NFL Network. The 2012 seventh-round draft pick started 20 of 29 games during three seasons with the Patriots.
The Patriots save $1.542 million against the salary cap by cutting Dennard. They've also been linked to more undrafted free agents than they've got room to hold on the 90-man roster, so the Pats have to make cuts to create space before those signings become official.
Dennard showed flashes of potential with a physical style, but he peaked as a rookie and struggled with consistency the rest of the way.

Such a weird career with the Patriots. He was a nice contributor his rookie year, saw plenty of reps. In his second year he was the #2 corner. Last year he completely disappeared and was inactive nearly every game. I hoped he would bounce back this year and resume his starting role with Revis and Browner gone.

I would be surprised if he becomes a solid contributor on another team. The Pats have a great infrastructure to get the most out of potential talent. He has flame out written all over him IMO. Hope not.

Yikes. Certainly has the talent, but does he have the focus/maturity to be a professional?
Someone will pick him up and give him another shot.
