Ok fellas I need some advice. I have lost the last 2 teeth on my upper jaw, left side. I need some work, obviously, so do I do an implant or a bridge? The cost is outrageous for both, especially the implant and I have been told it could take up to a year for the implant. I am 65… would appreciate the advice

Implant unless you want the other 14 teeth to migrate. @Catch1lion can you opine on this?

I feel your pain. Literally.

Dental costs and insurance are ridiculous. You can pay cash and get a better price. At our age, we don't really care about insurance coverage for cleanings, rather hey Doc - fill these 2 holes in my mouth, will ya? - which insurance will barely touch.

Similar situation and I had mine pulled. Of coarse I was 75 at the time, no problems in 5+ years.

Last year I had a cracked tooth. After the extraction, Swedish implant and crown, it cost me $7700 out of pocket. The oral surgeon was brilliant, but he should be at that price. Delta Dental Insurance is the worst, I only collected $600 back from the extraction.

My advice to you - drink heavily.

And then get the implants. And then drink some more.

Just make sure not to get your tongue in front of your eye teeth. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see what you are saying.

I’ve had two implants (teeth) for several years now and I certainly don’t regret the decision. They have worked fine and I forget they are implants.

Contrary to popular belief, a 'dentist' provided George Washington with cadaver teeth, not wood. Might be a cheaper alternative.

Just a couple quick questions to clarify... you lost the last two teeth on your maxillary left side, so no teeth behind them at this point? Were they both molars, and now you have only premolars (bicuspids) remaining?

If so, and those are the only two options you are entertaining, certainly get a consult for implant/s and see what your options are for that procedure. A traditional bridge requires teeth on either side of the gap. A cantilever bridge can be placed but only would recommend in certain situations. Two premolars tied together with a "hanging" molar is not ideal in my opinion. Lots of occlusal chewing force on molars.

Without knowing the state of your oral health and other teeth, that is the best I can offer in advice. I will say at 65, you are not as likely to have the other remaining maxillary teeth to shift significantly. You are at some risk of the mandibular teeth to supraerupt without a positive occlusal stop though.

Hope that helps a little (oh... and don't go to Mexico. Or the Philippines.)

You have confused the heck out of me! All I know is that when they bring the needles out on Tuesday morning… I am gonna let the expletives fly!

I knew the wooden teeth was a myth but was not aware he had cadaver teeth. I wonder if the Dentist was friends with a mortician or did he reimburse the family iof the deceased? Was that a common practice in those days? "Inquiring minds want to know"
