OXFORD — Ole Miss linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche has admitted in the past the Egg Bowl is more for his teammates than him.
He’s from suburban Atlanta, not Mississippi, and didn’t really get why the game against Mississippi State was such a big deal. He has said he did not watch the 2011 game, when he was a redshirt candidate. The next year he said he was playing for his “brothers.”
But losing in Starkville was a reminder, he said, of what a big deal the game is.
“It definitely changed a lot of people’s outlook on that game and that rivalry,” Nkemdiche said. “They play it so much out of hate and they take so much into that game, we saw it first-hand and we saw how it felt to lose that game together, as a team. It did motivate us. It did make us think that it shouldn’t have come down to overtime. We should have made the plays earlier on, throughout the game. … That’s what we’re using to take the offseason to get better.”
Along those same lines, linebacker Serderius Bryant said ending the regular season on two-straight losses has influenced the bowl game preparation.
“We’ve been telling each other, even before the bowl game (was announced), whoever we play was going to come out and get it just because of how we’re feeling right now,” Bryant said.

The official position of your esteemed institution is that the egg bowl is just another game for ev'ybody in bear land so you are right on with the program.

Apparently you need to spread the word to some of your teammates.

'Out of hate'
I saw lots of love after the game with Mullen's embrace of both Dak and Nickoe. They are so conflicted. Players ...wasn't a big deal ....now a big deal. Fans y'all wanted it more we don't see y'all as our rival.blah blah blah.....keep trying to convince yourselves. It's an easier sell.

So this Egg Bowl loss doesn't count because Denzel Nkiajdbfalknsmvnsh said he didn't realize it was that big of a game.

I wouldn't mind if they just went ahead and acted too cool for the Egg Bowl from here on out. If only we could convince LSU to feel the same way when they play us.

I guess when you want it more crazy thing happen, like winning four out of five.

I find it hilarious that the route they have chosen to take with this is "it means more to them." I can't honestly believe that D-1 athletes are going along with that. Are they saying they are competitors? Or that their will to win is less than an opponent? I don't see how that possibly makes anyone feel better. When I feel like we've been outworked and outhustled, I am way more upset than I am when we play hard and lose.

I give him credit for one thing. He was right, it shouldn't have come to OT. We should have beat them 3 scores or more. Our (SP teams) gave them their 1 TD. Not only that, we had 2 should be turnovers that should have gone our way. Of course, our missed FG's. Then last but not least, could you imagine how bad it would have got, it Dak was available a full 4 quarters and not just a partial quarter. He racked up like 140 yards by himself in what 11 mins tops?

Denzel should feel lucky it was close as it was. 4/5 brah.

He left the field last year before they stormed it. That kind of quickness is why he is all conference instead of B-Mac.
if he'd stuck around for that he would better understand.

Hugh say he's lying......

after 2012 Egg Bowl:
"“I know how important it is to this state and to our University, and our kids were very aware of that tonight,” Freeze said. “I think our coaches did a great job of going through the week and making sure that whether a kid was from Tennessee or Alabama or Florida or Illinois or California that they better understand that the University of Mississippi has signed them on and is paying for their scholarship here and that this game is important. Our kids proved that tonight.”

That's fun. Kid takes the fanbase's argument as to why their collective asses don't sting as much as they let on, and it's all refuted by his own words in an interview and his own coaches words.

Any reb's here care to comment as to why a key player on the team is making the same excuses Nutt made?

Seriously though, didn't Freeze mention how important the Egg Bowl was in his opening press conference after being hired? It's crazy how after every year State wins, the party line from their coaches and players is "We didn't understand how important this game was." Houston Nutt said this after every single time he lost to State- now Nkemdiche?

Honestly, Nkemdiche is just doing his job and repeating the party line until he convinces people it's true- no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

The MSU plays with "hate" stuff is really impressive. This is right out of the Jackie Sherrill Is The Devil Playbook.

Agreed. I've had several people mention to me that we "hate" them and are vicious fans or something. I don't get that a bit.

Personally, I had an OM fan write on my Facebook that I, "needed to get across the road quicker if I was going to be wearing MSU stuff, because she might just speed up next time." Not anyone I talk to regularly, but someone I consider a casual friend. I know I don't say junk like that, nor care to.

I don't see how they say this stuff with a straight face. Some consider themselves the more "rational" fans. I did too until I started hearing that junk.

I'm pretty sure we all watched the game, and I'll be generous and say there was a lot of back and forth from both sides, but they kinda seemed to be doing a lot more of it IMO.

The fact that their players say it kinda hints to me that Freeze is probably in there spouting the same junk. "We play for love, they play for hate". Not the most Christian thing I've ever heard of, but whatever works I guess.

Yep, the GA that grabbed Calhoun out of bounds and laughed about it was holding him out of love.***

Also on the love/hate issue: there were a number of reports on here last year about the way OM fans acted in Oxford. There is zero doubt that this game is important to them. I can laugh at the fans but their team members saying we cared more is an embarrassment. You aren't a 17ing competitor at heart if you are OK with the other team wanting it more.

Had a Bear fan set about 5 or 6 rows in front of me

He was a fairly vocal pain in the ***, until it became evident that THEY may actually lose.

I Hated HIM! I did.

I proceeded to yell the anti Hoddy Toddy,... Who in the Hell Gives a Damn

He had no further words...

I have plenty of Bear Friends. I don't Hate them at all.

Didn't they storm the damn field last year? The butt hurt is grand coming out of Freezeland.

yeah, but they stormed the field out of love. we, on the other hand, didn't storm the field out of hate for them. surely you see the difference....

let them keep banging that love hate ********. it means absolutely nothing and their bucked-tooth hc has been exposed for being anything but exceptional in the sec.

I think the fact he didn't even watch the 2011 Egg Bowl when he was redshirting says a lot about the caliber of people they're recruiting. How the hell do you not even watch ANY game that your team is playing when you're on the team? No matter who it's against.

Bingo ...

Isn't that exactly what Nutt said. Almost verbatim.

It has become the 'mantra' ... their sacred utterance. Nutt used the excuse back when he was still considered the 'savior.' (I still have fond memories of those times and the hogs that would come around to poke fun at em and just told them to ... 'wait a year or two.' Those posts made for some great entertainment)

Four out of the last five years, just like clockwork ... some reb suddenly 'discovers' the truth ...

Also from this year .... former Ole Miss quarterback Romaro Miller --As for how to handle the rivalry, it's hard because if you poll Ole Miss fans, close to half will say LSU is the rival, and the others will say MSU. At State it's all Ole Miss. It makes for a different game, and it's one we have to handle. We have to be the superior team from a talent standpoint and just go play our game and take care of it.
