Oh yeah BlackK10 I had forgotten that we beat Franklin that year. A group of talented athletes that peaked at the right time.
The 1976 Robbinsville team was a juggernaut! Not only a undefeated State Champion but also beat the Franklin team that won the 2A championship that year!
Gal, I love you man but you're the biggest sandbagger on these boards.....lolHow is a Swain favored? Playing the defending champs at home, while being banged up, with a much younger team. Another Black Knight fan was saying 2-3 TD advantage and on another thread has already stated that they are the best team in the conference. Black Knights are the clear favorite but I like Swain's chances. Should be a great game. Team who makes the fewest mistakes wins.
You are correct Go4itKnights, Coach Colvin said that team had no weakness.. The first team didn't get to play very much that year, but there wasn't any difference in the first and second team. I think the first team D gave up 24 points that year and the second team gave up 32. Out of the 13 games they had 7 shutouts, Swain scored more on them than anybody, scoring 18.Oldknight, Teddy and Matt graduated in 77, so they were on the 76 team. Tim Solesbee graduated in 78, so he was a junior on the 76 team and even though Matt was 1st string, Tim got a fair amount of QB time too. Good times - those guys were fun to watch.
Would have liked to have had an opportunity to play against that great Robbinsville team in 76' when I was a Senior in High School in Mark Manuel's first season in Rosman, but we couldn't beat Maxton(34-7) after leading 7-0 at the half...Maxton had set a state record for points scored in a final the year before, beating North Duplin 86-8, behind talented RB James MacDougle(sp?) who finished his career at Wake Forest....I think we did soften Maxton up for that 2nd round state-semifinal matchup at Big Oaks with the Black Knights(Robbinsville beat defending state champ Maxton 42-8 before beating Princeton(34-6) for the 1A title) as we knocked-out their 1st and 2nd string QB that night only to have a 3rd stringer come in who started throwing bombs to speedy receivers that our Sophomore DB could not keep up with after we lost our Senior DB Eddie Green to a concussion right before the half...We did hold that Maxton team to less than a 100yds rushing that night, and they came in averaging nearly 300yds per game on the ground...We just wasn't prepared for the aerial assault that came in the 2nd half ...
Ahhh...The good ole' days...lol!
As for the game at Big Oaks this friday, it's probably going to be a dandy as both teams are hard to run against....The Millsap cousins will be tough for the Maroondevils to corrale, and the same can be said for the big RBs for the Maroondevils who are also hard too stop....Possibilly going to be a muddy field this friday, so may be a low-scoring game fo the SMC Championship?
Good luck to both teams!
Roar Tigers Roar!
I don't recall what the broadcasting policy was before Coach Walsh, but he is our AD and as such, has to think about the bottom line - so he wants the gates to be as big as possible.I don't think we allowed broadcasting before Walsh came to town either. So I don't think he is the reason.
For Colvin to say it, you can take it to the bank. He was never one to compliment or praise ... he was always asking for more. We wouldn't mind a whole string of 76 teams, right oldknight? You are correct Go4itKnights, Coach Colvin said that team had no weakness.. The first team didn't get to play very much that year, but there wasn't any difference in the first and second team. I think the first team D gave up 24 points that year and the second team gave up 32. Out of the 13 games they had 7 shutouts, Swain scored more on them than anybody, scoring 18.

Rick was that one of the years that Rosman was in a different conference? And you were a senior in 76 and played for Mark? I saw Mark down in Raleigh at our championship game. He was looking good and recovering from knee surgery I believe. Maxton was a powerhouse in the 70s ... I remember we played them just about every year in the playoffs. I didn't remember that you guys took out their 1st and 2nd string QBs - I imagine that played a part in our win. Is the '76 Eddie Green you mentioned any relation to Tanner Green?
Purnell Swett I believeWhat school does the MAxton community go to now?
