Last year Torbush and his 20 yr old style of defense (along with Tyson's timely turnovers) cost us 3 maybe 4 games. Giving up 26.8 pts/game, which is our worst since 2003. With today's offenses you can't have your LBs, DEs, Saftiessitting back and readingRBs and the QB, you'll get eat alive (ie. Auburn last year, Arkansas). You have to attack. Which is of course what Diaz is supposed to bring. So what stat should be our goal for the season? 20 pts/game sounds about right to me.

At least I think that's what it will even out to. I'm sure Arkansas will put up more than that, and probably Florida, Alabama and maybe Houston. But, I would hope we could hold teams like Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi, and Kentucky to right at that number and surely we can really limit teams like Memphis, Alcorn, and UAB.

Torbush's 3 man fronts won't be common place anymore. Watching Mallet against 3 men rushing at him was so frustrating. Hopefully the day of 3 man fronts is gone. I'm looking for drastic improvement. Don't forget about Chris Wilson. I've been hearing great things about him from other coaches and players and recruits.

I know this sounds silly but there is more to it than just points.

Team A gives up 28 points (4 touchdowns). They force zero turnovers and each touchdown drive by the opponent eats up about 7-8 minutes. The otherpossessions bythe opponent producesmany first downs.

Team B gives up 28 points (4 touchdowns). They also force 3 turnovers (one returned for a TD), and don't allow any clock-eating drives. The otherpossessionsby the opponent are generally 3 plays and punt.

The Team A scenario will result in a beat-down. Your offense is constantly on the sideline, and forced to drive the length of the field when they do get the ball. You lose 28-10. The Team B scenario gives your offense a chance. The defense gives them some good field position at times, especially with the turnovers. The defense also produces 7 points of their own. You can win this game 35-28.

I think the attack mentality that Diaz has will result in giving up some points. But I think it will alsoproducesome big defensiveplays, avoid the lengthy will-breaking drives, and keep the offense from getting in a groove and constantly dictating the tempo.

Again, I think that's a reasonable hope based on who we play and what would be a realistic expectation against them.
