Did Dr. Tom ever fire an assistant coach?

I can't remember, they seem to get axed pretty fast these days.

Yes, he fired two coaches, both former players. And one other was "reassigned" to other athletics duties.
Tom was more likely to try to "help" an assistant with his duties rather than fire him. Years ago it was pretty well known around town that Tom was not very good at delegating duties and would micromanage his assistants to the point that he virtually did much of the off the field work for or with them to be sure they were getting it right. You had to be pretty untrainable for him to get rid of you IMO.

and thus he handed over a program coming off an historic run to an assistant who carried the titles of offensive coordinator and assistant head coach who in reality was little more than the running backs coach and thus ill prepared to be the head man at a major program let alone the preeminent college football program of 90s.

but I digress ...
