“Before Yogi Berra’s “yogisms,” there was “Stengelese,” a special language for the naturally loquacious Stengel. He had a unique vocabulary that he used with a mangled syntax, non-sequiturs, and an amazing propensity to speak in run-on sentences without let-up and digress into areas not remotely relevant to the point or question.
No better example of “Stengelese” exists than the verbatim transcript Appel includes from the Congressional Record of July 9, 1958, of Stengel’s testimony before a Senate Committee considering antitrust legislation.
Senator Estes Kefauver never did get a coherent answer from him. Frustrated with Stengel, the senator asked Mickey Mantle his opinion, but the Mick simply said he agreed with Casey although he had no idea what Stengel had actually meant.”
