Did the announcer seriously question why they didn't go for two?

Uh....let's see, you're down 24-18 before the extra point try. You go for two and you don't get it, then you have to get a TD and then you have to make the extra point. If you go for one, to make it 24-19, then a TD wins it no matter what.

Am I missing something here?

He loaded up on the jets at +4 and was trying to talk himself into a way he could push

....and then you're down eight if you go for one. I'm of the school of thought that you only go for two when the situation demands you need two points, so I would say let the Steelers get their FG, then we go score eight.

if they score again, they could go up 27-24 and the Steelers could only force OT with a FG instead of winning the game with a FG

....a QB follow "the guy" and succeed? (referring to Aaron Rogers following Favre)

I guess Steve Young was before Shannon Sharpe's time.

but with about 3 minutes left in the game and the Steelers about to go into clock killing mode, I didn't think there was enough time for that to happen.

I also think you should go for two if you have a team that is outmanned and you are in the second OT in college- like Boise State/Oklahoma or Jacksonville State/UM. Yes, I just had to throw that in there.

Down six and down five are the same unless the xp is missed, and you still have the tie then.

Down four means if you score td they can only tie, not win with fg.

They should have gone for two. Didn't end up mattering tho.

That would have put the game out of reach, although with the time left, if they'd've got a fg the clock would've been eaten up by the drive.

Let's say you go for 2 and miss it. Down 24-18 now. Then let's say you get the ball back and somehow score, the game is now tied 24-24, and you have to get the extra point to win.

What happens if the snap is botched or the kick is blocked?

You kick it to get to 5, and then you determine on the second score if you're down 8 and need the 2 or if you're down 5 and want the 2 to go up 3. That way, if you're down 5 and score the TD, you're up 25-24 already, and the extra point/2 point conversion is not as important.

It's highly unlikely you botch 2 extra points in a row. If you leave it to where you need that last extra point, anything can happen.

Because if you go for the first one and miss, you're down six (24-18), and a Steelers FG makes it a 2 score game (thus ending the game). Take the extra point, and then even if the Steelers get a FG before you get the ball back, you have a chance to score and go for 2 to tie at 27. This also applies to if you score the TD, then you're up 1 (25-24), and you can go for 2 for the 3 point lead.
