Did we win a recruiting battle this year?

It seems almost every one of our signees were considered heavy leans to us throughout the recruiting process. Fred Ross is the only person we flipped. Certain people on this board want us to believe Chris Jones was never interested in Ole Miss, and just went there to gather information. If you believe that, then what matchups did we win?

Shumpert was being chased by UGA but had not yet committed

to them when he gave us his commit ... I think that was probably as close as we got

A few I think

DaRunnya Wilson (Auburn/Tenn)
Fred Ross (as you mentioned flipped from OkState)
Ashton Shumpert (Ole Miss/UGA)
Tolando Cleveland (we flipped from GT)

This year seems like we had a really bad year recruiting. But we still had a top 25 class that filled a number of needs. I think we as MSU fans do judge ourselves by the success of Ole Miss (and conversely they do the same). Had we gotten Mix (which is a black mark on the class) we would have finished in the 18-20 range.
Mullen has done a pretty good job, and he doesn't get much credit, for locking in guys early. Take a Jake Thomas, or Kent Flowers. Those guys are thought of as being the best OL in the State. Or at least top 3 or 4. Also techincally he did lock Chris Jones in early even though it got shaky at the end.

Don't forget about Tolando Cleveland and Damian Williams....

No inside info but from Chris's statements and Mama Jones, I would gather Chris wanted to go to Ole Miss and Mama Jones said Hell No.

We got 2 good QB's and 65 wide receivers so we beat out somebody for them.

I'd agree Derunnya Wilson was a pretty good get considering he's from AU territory. We're not gonna win that battle often (thank you basketball).

So heavy leans aren't considered beating somebody out anymore? Hmmm. I've got nothing for you, then. Continue to wallow in negativity.

I think you are right in that Ross is probably the only highly regarded player that we signed that on paper we probably shouldn't have. He was definitely a nice pull. All the others were guys that we got we were the favorite on or they were not highly regarded prospects. For example, Cleveland and D Wilson were definitely nice players we picked up with other BCS offers but neither would be considered real blue chippers.

I am glad you have nothing for me, because I certainly don't want anything from crazy people. Sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled barking at the mailman.

Bottom line is that it is and always has been tough for us to recruit against the big boys. Most of the time, we lose out. Sad but true.

It all comes down to learning how to play "the game" right. And we obviously don't.

Losing Deon Mix hurt real real bad in my book. It has more to do with the logistics of the entire situation than the actual ability that he has on the field.

That's why you have to give props to OM in their recruiting effort this year (by whatever means they used). Not only did they recruit against the big boys on multiple players and win they did it in many cases in the big boy's back yard. Its one thing for us or OM to keep a guy home that the SEC power schools are after but its totally another when we go into another state and pull a big time recruit out from under their very noses. That's what OM did with a number of players this year which is definitely weird because its not like a lot of big time out of state recruits grow up dreaming to play their college ball in MS, they just don't.
