John Handley's most famous alumnae did not graduate high school?

Patsy Cline, dropped out of high school to work and help support her family. I would say she did ok for herself.

Handley, arguably one of the most architecturally beautiful public high schools in all of Virginia, sure fell on hard times last season. Probably more telling that the 0-10 season is the fact that they scored only 89 points. And 62 of those were scored in three of their games. That means the Judges scored only a total of 28 points in the other 7 games.

This is a long, long way from the Hanley teams that once won state championships.

Can the Judges improve and find a few victories in 2016?

I just don't see where any of the teams they played last season will be significantly weaker this coming season, so the burden lies wholly on Handley. Unfortunately, I don't think help will be coming from the JV squad. With only one win and a tie to hang their future success on, they better have a plan "B"!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a new head coach on board? And didn't he have some pretty decent credentials?

Ok Hammy, and ClarkeFan. We are in your back yard on this one. Tells us how they are going to win games again.

Sorry Judges, I'm predicting 1-9, but only because I believe at least one opponent will be looking past you.

One last thing. If one of you can find the utube flyover video of the stadium, please post it here for everyone to enjoy. It was quite impressive.

Good stuff. Thanks, Mike. I would assume that the interior of this facility is as fancy as the outside?

When doing my research, Handley was listed as an "endowed public school". Beyond the obvious, what does this mean, how does it differ fro what I would describe as an "ordinary" public school?

I assume that Handley is the only high school in Winchester? And only residence of Winchester can attend this school?

Handley is going to have a rough few years ahead of them. Unless they get a bunch of transfers from Sherando and Millbrook, fuhgedaboutit. They do have a new coach, they have got a drop dead gorgeous stadium and field, best in the area imho. They've got a good support system as well. The new principal there is a good guy, I graduated HS with him in Manassas years ago. I went to the Clarke County/Handley game last season, really enjoyed the place.

That said, they should play home games on Friday nights, not Saturday afternoons. Saturday is college ball, Friday night is HS. Period.

John Handley High School is an endowed public high school located in the city ofWinchester, Virginia. It was founded by a grant from Judge John Handley, hence the school mascot, the Judges.

Since it was founded due to the grant it's referred to as endowed.

Daniel Morgan the middle school that feeds Handley had a football team for the first time in many years and went undefeated this past year. I expect Handley to be back to normal in 2-3 years.

I was told it was a concession to the neighborhood association!

I doubt that. Former State Senator Russ Potts was a huge Handley supporter and lived in a big white plantation style home near the field. He fought to keep the "Handley Tradition" of Saturday afternoon games, which started way before neighborhood associations ever came about.

Doesn't fully endowed mean that there is a pile of donated money somewhere and they are basically funded off the interest from those funds. I could be way off base here but I know that it is something along those lines.

Yep, they are fully endowed. Judge Handley put up around $250K, and that was a long time ago when $250K was something! I think the endowment is currently in the millions. There's a ton of stuff out there on the internet about it. This one is kind of cool: http://www.newrivernotes.com/topical_books_1930_virginia_winchesterpublicschools.htm

Yeah they're like college in a lot of ways from the tradition of playing on Saturdays to the endowment like most colleges have.

Went to Handley 2 years ago when GW played them for the state quarterfinals in basketball! Gorgeous place on the inside and out. Loooooooong ride from Danville but I enjoyed it. Winchester and the surrounding area is very nice and clean and low crime! Great place to be. One thing that I saw up there is the community support. I saw fans from Sherando, Millbrook, and James Wood there cheering the team on. You definitely don't see that everywhere.

When a Winchester/Frederick County/Clarke County area team does well and goes to the playoffs, you can pretty much count on support from those communities to show up.

I don't mind Handley playing on Saturday at all. It lets me see two games a week every now and then.

There's one thing about Handley playing on Saturdays that, as a band fan, bugs me. Their Marching Band and Color Guard do not get to compete at the competitions that are held on Saturdays.

I like what Shruikan pointed out. A chance to see two games each week!

Isn't parking at Handley limited? I thought I heard that "on-street" parking is pretty much the norm at football games?

I've often thought it would be neat if Salem played at least one regular-season home game each year on a Saturday afternoon. With the tailgating and socializing in which many of our fans like to partake, it could be a great atmosphere; almost collegial. Pure fantasy on my part, as I know it will never happen. Coach Magenbauer likes staying in the Friday routine, and I would guess we wouldn't want to compete with college football.

More and more colleges, however, seem to have no problem with playing on Friday nights.

Whenever I've gone I've ended up needing to park on one of the streets near the school, though it's honestly never been that big of a deal. I've had to walk further to get the stadium at some WV high schools because of how they're set up.

Go to James Monroe's Stadium at Maury Field. There are no parking facilities at all. You park the streets and walk and this field is almost always packed. The atmosphere is very special.

It's easy to find parking at Handley games quite frankly becuase the home team is regularly doubled or tripled in attendance by the visiting teams coming to the stadium. It's very dissapointing to me the fan support that Handley football team has gotten since the stadium renovation .

You've gotta' win games and be relevant. When you make such pathetic showings, it's tough to be a fan and pay money to see your team's butt kicked every week.

Yes sir, on street parking is really no big deal. It kind of adds to the uniqueness of the experience. I went up to the Dinwiddie at James Monroe JV game last fall. They played at Historic Maury Field. The school is in a primarily residential neighborhood. There is a small parking lot, but we just parked on the street. Other than losing, it was a really fun day. I loved the setting.

UVA never wanted to host the game to begin with. It wanted to be a second option for the games, but was stuck because the venue they wanted to use ODU wanted astronomical figures to host the game. As far as a coach whining about having to travel its not about the travel time his beef was he feels the games should be rotated around the state. A stance that he reiterated yesterday in the paper, so that I can be hosted in each region and not just in one place every year. http://pilotonline.com/sports/high-...cle_ed8e0757-cb52-5c47-844b-ce59ff7b6ce4.html

A lot of people in this area hear Lynchburg and say naw I'm not going there. That's just their beliefs, the same way Salem fans probably wouldn't come to a game in Williamsburg or Hampton because they may view that as too far. The real crime is in basketball where they have predetermined the sites for each classification. No one is going to ride to the Salem Civic Center for a state final 4 of all East teams or East and teams from NOVA in 4A. GW Danville vs. Monacan and Champe vs. Lake Taylor were the final 4. Those games would have been dead.
Wrong thread.

I saw it in the State Championship with Salem and LT. So many fans from around the Blue Ridge. Fleming, PH, Northside, and Byrd fans, I saw the most. Lots of support on the west side when east meets west.

I'm sure they'd skip out on the game for a competition.
