It's clear that he loves the game, but why come back. Just checked the most recent depth chart. They have the incoming freshmen in front of him at WR.
I have no inside info but he seems to be having a ball. Making money on his show, hanging out with the boys and going to grad school for free. Why move on?

Finish school, get into coaching or broadcasting. He knows his future isn't playing football.

He appears to be living the dream.

I can see it when you look at it that way. Looking at it more as a competitor. No way I could hold my helmet as a 6th year guy for an 18 year old.

It did not seem to both him last year, why would it this upcoming season?

Seems like a real positive person on the team and in the locker room and proud to be a Gamecock and want to finish his 6 year career here :).

Are there any other Muschamp guys left on the roster?

Doty was in the same class with Trevor Lawrence I think. How many years has he been at Carolina?

I can't say I blame him for hanging around. Getting paid to practice and hang out with the team while getting a graduate degree doesn't sound like a bad gig. I do wonder about a couple of things.

First, I remember being a senior and thinking about how young the freshmen and sophomores looked on campus. I have to wonder if Doty feels like an "old man" in the locker room around the freshmen and sophomores since he will be 24 in October.

Second, I wonder if he is on scholarship? If so, it makes me wonder if Shane can't find a better player to use that scholarship? Having a 24 year old backup taking a scholarship seems sort of wasteful.

If you look at the 2020 recruiting class, I thought Edmonds would be a candidate but he did do the pro day, so I don't see anyone else from the 2020 class. Maybe some walkons?

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I don’t really get the Doty praise for sticking around. Yeah, in the portal quitter era, I appreciate a guy who stuck around in spite of never seriously challenging to start. Not everyone can be a starter and you need players for practice and such.

But at this point, he’s not going above and beyond for Gamecock football, right? He just doesn’t have any other options. And he’s taking up a scholly.

I know. He’s a great guy. Loves USC and all that, but at some point, your time is up. Is this his 8th year? He enrolled In 2018, right?

Not so sure about the wasteful thing.

I think I'd be willing to burn a scholarship if I'm getting his dedication and leadership in return. (to show the other players) I'm sure all that has been weighed by Beamer. Remember the LB (I think) that came to Shane this past season after a loss and told Shane he thought he should redshirt? Shane showed him the door rather quickly. My point is, I don't think it's being allowed for no reason.

Well, if we are fortunate enough to go to a bowl game next year, I think we can count on him not quitting the team at halftime. That's worth something to me.

I'm not sure suggesting he is living the dream is praising him. I am suggesting that I don't blame him for sticking around. He seems to be enjoying himself.

I don’t blame him. Playing college football is a dream. I just don’t necessarily agree with the take some have that he’s sacrificing in some way for the program.

Why would anyone pay Doty to just hang around?
I don't know for sure but I imagine there is some sort of baseline NIL money that every player on scholarship or possibly every player on the team is getting.

Agree with that. He's not sacrificing, he's literally living the dream. Making money, playing football, likeky has the pick of the litter and being a big man on campus.

He's getting paid for his show and has some NIL deals. He is marketable. Smart, good looking (according to my wife), well spoken and on the football team.

I don't kmow that he's on scholarship. Maybe he is, maybe not. I could see giving up one scholarship for an average at best player that is good guy in the locker room and can mentor younger players. Maybe a grad assistant would be a better role.

My personal opinion is that the program has bigger fish to fry. Having a good guy on the roster for an extra year or two is likely not at the top of Beamer's priority list.

Why would he return? He's hardly ever getting on the field. The coaching staff has never used him much.

Good question. At some point you’re just dead weight.

Do you guys watch any of our games actually? He’s on the field a bunch with special teams and does a damn good job. But all of our great football analyst on this board only watch touchdowns. Oh yeah, special teams aren’t important.

Well, you know you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel when you’ve resorted to the “he’s a key special team’s player“ argument.

I remember reading about him on IF and thought he was gonna be a GREAT QB and he was as fast as could be when he was being recruited. So much for that. Remember seeing him run down a player from behind who was already practicing his TD moves in his head. USC hasn't had a head-turning QB in a LONG time.

Wish we had one on this roster.
