He can earn the money back by winning at least 9 games each season for the next 9 years. I don't see him staying employed that long, and it's not clear how the $4.5 mill factors into his buyout.

Article says Gundy did something similar.

I think the coaches are waking up. The schools have been asking fans to pay for everything, meanwhile the players and coaches' contracts are skyrocketing annually, and we were all getting pissed because it wasn't tied to performance. You paid them, they sucked, so you paid them more in cash to get them out the door (Orgeron, Fisher, et al)

This is a great a way for the coach to build goodwill like DS said, and in a way that makes his own team better and builds job security for himself. I love it.
