Seems like I remember he was a 2-star that we picked up late in the class. He wanted an offer but we weren't sure about him.

I recall either the coaches or our recruiting gurus being impressed with his competitiveness and saying he had a "mean streak".

Am I remembering that right? Either way glad we've got him.

That's what I thought. There was a lot of griping about us taking him, but as I recall we needed OL depth.

They were right about the nasty streak. I love it.

I seem to

recall people thinking he was undersized (at that time), but like you said, our coaches liked his toughness. Maybe there were some grade concerns, too?

I live in SC and happen to be friends with an LSU fan from Monroe (or MUN-row as they say it). He said they tried to get him an offer from LSU, but Miles was sold on the guy they've got now.

If Day seemed a little pissed at Miles and LSU that might explain why, huh?

Dillon was not highly recruited.. but his video showed he was a beast (YouTube).. I was very surprised not many schools were on him.. been following the recruiting game a long time.. back then there were a lot of message board fans pressing for a scholarship offer.. we offered him a last second scholarship.. Thank goodness!!!

Along those lines.. 2011 QB Dak Prescott looked like the best QB prospect we have had to me when we recruited him back then.. It was in the middle of the Tyler Russell hype (who I argued up and down with my brother Dak would be the better QB).

A few years earlier (2007?) I emailed Reid Stringer, Woody McCorvey, and Sylvester Croom about Austin Davis (he was a big State fan).. didn't surprise me how that one turned out.. he was never highly recruited though..

Been following this recruiting game since 1996.. some videos and people just stand out IMO.

The Eye in the Sky Doesn't Lie.

I remember saying the same about Dak as a recruit. Seems like we were just getting over the Cam Newton sting, and I told my (LSU) buddy we just found another Cam in Louisiana. He really thought Dak would flip to LSU but thank goodness he was wrong.

I don't think it was ever grades. I don't think he's Einstein but he seemed like a "smart" guy when I was there.

He was (and is) a small guy for his position. OL recruiting seems to be the most fickle of all positions and is beyond the least accurate. Chalk it up as the same reason we got Calhoun. For some reason one of the GAs had enough time to evaluate his tapes rather than someone else's when a scholarship became open.

Also a lot of people didn't think he would make it grade wise. He was able to get in and help us out in a big way.

It was grades. At least according to whatever recruiting site I was on back then.

6'4 237 in recruiting...
As a true freshman, he was 260...
By the time he was playing "too early" a rsFR, he was 295 and has been within 5 lbs ever since.

We've obviously got him on the Latimer cocktail**

Size. He was the meanest son of a ***** we had on campus since david stewart. Hevesy told him if he could gain 30 or so pounds and keep it on, he would get a scholly. He did.

I remember Rosebowl posting a lot of clips of Day...

..talking him up. Showing how hard he played every snap. All that was before we even offered.
