Not sure if its just for existing customers or not.

I just got a free HD-DVR. Some family members did too. Only catch is a 2-year contract.

....they gave me Showtime free for an entire year.

Only other thing I can say is that I bought NFL $unday ticket a few times. Must be high margin for them.

that you can call customer service to discuss your bill every 12 months or so and they'll hook you up with some type of deal for another 12 months to keep you around. You've just got to call and ask for them.

Also, if you've had DirecTV a while, they just changed up plans and lowered rates but you wont get the lower rate package unless you switch. I switched mine and get about the same channels, more sports now, for about $25 less a month. The new ones are easier to pick what you want and dont want.

There are only 2 kinds TV-owning people - those with DVRs and those who don't have one yet.

I will have to check that out.

I've been with DTV a long time. They don't offer the package I currently have and they hate it. Nothing I've ever seen them offer has the same or more channels for less than what I'm paying. Or if it does, the offer deletes one of my must-have's.

They call me every 6 moths or so with some really sweet deal - like free NFL Sunday Ticket or free premium channels for a year if I agreed to upgrade my package so something that they currently offer. Haven't done it though.

over my old one and pay less.. The base package might not have what you want but you can add others for small charges each month as compared to before. The changes have only been in place a few months I believe.

Also, just purchased an external hard drive to plug into my DVR to expand the recording capacity.

if your a student in starkville.... i've had metrocast, i've had dish, and i've had directv. Long story short, metrocast is run by absolute miserable incoherent asshats that literally have no clue. in the summer of 2010 when the world cup was on ESPN,my espn was out with several other channels...no kidding..more will post or recall it. dish is a steady and reasonable priced... an very, very outdated. their features, movie access, and ppv are exremely unexciting and uneventful. Directv, well if you sign up for directv in auguest (obviously when your new lease beings if you've moved) they'll throw in nfl sunday ticket for free. for free. whatever package you choose blah blah blah this and that. nfl sundayticket is worth what your paying for the other 350 channels your gettting. easy as that. Directv: $141a month with every channel and nfl sunday ticket for 6 months, after that $164 a month for every regular channel and HBO's

I don't think I'll ever go back to Comcast from DTV. It is expensive, and they are incompetent at times (just like every other cable/dish company), but the total product is so much better than any other option. The DVR is phenomenal, the HD picture is much better, the channel choices are better...<div>

The DVR receivers are Slloooooooooww when changing channels or pulling the guide. They have been slow since they were new. That Chinese receiver that I was... Ahem.... Only watching free to air channels on before Dish tightened up would run circles around the DTV receiver in speed.

Maybe I just need an upgrade. I guess I could threaten to leave to call their bluff on some new equipment. But I would def stick with them.

The DVR's must be making use of all the chips left over from Commodore 64's. The speed at which you can navigate is atrocious. Regular HD receiver? No problem. HD DVR?... blows chunks.

....is that when you pull the guide up, move the cursor on top of the TV channel names all the way to the left instead of leaving the cursor on top of program names. When you cursor-over a program name, the DVR spends CPU cycles trying to retrieve & display program info which you aren't interested in if you are just surfing through the guide.

Leave the cursor over the TV channel names and program guide surfing is a lot more responsive.
