Just got woken up in the delta by a thunderclap that made me believe the good lord was coming home, and can’t go back to sleep. So I turned on The U on ESPN.

The question, why can Miami, FSU, and Nebraska not get it back??? In the 80’s and 90’s they were unbelievable. Hell, the early 2000’s as well. And now they are just jokes. What is the boards opinion???

The same reason many successful family businesses hit the wall in the 3rd generation. Declining quality of leadership. Sometimes it happens more suddenly and sometimes it's more gradual. Once it's gone though awfully hard to get it back.

FSU has a national title in the last decade.
Miami doesn’t have the athletic department leadership to do it.
Nebraska no longer has any advantage against the majority of P5 schools, from a recruiting perspective. Playing for Tom Osborne was the previous advantage.

And getting away from the triple option. When they gave in to wanting to be like everyone else and hired Callahan to change the culture and run a pro style offense, they haven’t been the same since. Before then they were basically like facing a service academy but with Big 12 talent.

This looks like a pretty solid breakdown to me. I know some FSU people say that the locker room transition from Jimbo to Taggert was the issue.

I think the rise of UCF, USF and even FAU / FIU has hurt Miami and FSU. Not because they beat them for recruits, but I think it’s harder to convince a kid to stay in Tallahassee if he’s buried on the depth chart.

FSU and Miami both have the potential to turn it around. I just don’t see Nebraska ever getting back to the perennial power they were.

The reason is location. You’re seeing more of a shift to regional recruiting. The programs that used to recruit the top talent all over the country are no longer getting those players. They’re going to schools closer to home.

Florida is stacked with talent. Nebraska not so much.

Would argue about Nebraska and national recruiting. Won’t say they didn’t recruit nationally (think Tommie Frazier was from Florida). But Nebraska was built on strength and walkons growing into stars. Episode on gameday (maybe sportscenter) about Nebraska have first strength coach in 70s and how it kept them ahead. Eventually people caught up strength wise and with faster players

Do you think these traditional powerhouses don’t get the recruits as easily as they once did due to kids being able to play on TV at most P5 schools now days?

It is no coincidence that Tom Osborne retired following the the last Prop 48 class leaving school. That place was a joke for academics when it came to football players. Lawrence Phillips couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the c and the a as an example. Plus, they had "county" scholarships, were the best football player of the county was granted a scholarship or preferred walkon status, and they then somehow got an academic scholarship to cover their tuition. They wound up with a solid army of practice dummies. They were even worse than Kansas State under Bill Snyder for letting in pure illiterates. Being out on the plains of Nebraska isn't so attractive when you have to actually go to class. Osborne is one of the great phonies of college sports.

And what was the deal with the walkons? I remember they use to have about 100 of them, and then some NCAA rule change prevented them doing it.

Anyone remember the deal?

SEC sucks a lot of players up. Poor coaches. Long term coaches sometimes get stale.
Nebraska is a terrible fit for Big 10.

Miami's facilities are ****

I'll say this for Nebraska after staying in Lincoln for the CWS. They've got some seriously impressive facilities. That football stadium is massive and the basketball arena looks like an NBA arena.

Weren’t able to replace the coaches lost with someone with similar ability at Miami and FSU. Nebraska, I think The coaching hires combined with the expansion of tv cost them. Their used to be a handful of teams that were always on tv and Nebraska was one of them and they beat the crap out of everybody. Kids saw that and wanted to go there. You go through a few bad hires and 7 years later, the recruits for the upcoming season don’t even know you were ever any good cause they were 10 the last time you were relevant.

Reading through some of this made me feel even stronger about the decision to fire Moorhead and grab Leach. To maintain success at a high level you can't afford to have several years of being down, especially at a school that isn't a blue blood.
