Just listened to the guy from college football matrix on BSR say that Ole Miss has more talent than MSU. I've heard this several times. I know that I'm very biased but I just don't see this. I honestly want to know what they are referring to.

Really no contest on Defense so looking at offense I see our RB's being better and our overall WR corp being better or even. They may have us on OL but I really think we are about even. QB? Since Dak hasn't started a whole season? But I don't think so.

Some one clear this up for me. I can't see through my maroon colored glasses I guess.

If you covered sports and weren't involved with either school you would probably rely on recruiting rankings to gauge who has the better talent. There you go.

As a professional sports writer back in the 1980s I was supposed to vote in the AP High School poll every week. I was in South Mississippi and I was supposed to judge the talented teams up north without seeing them play. In order to do that I had to count on the judgement of other sportswriters to rank them in the top 10 teams of the state.

Exactly. What a lot of people don't realize is 90% of the so-called experts on TV, radio and the Internet don't really know a damn thing about more than about a dozen teams.

Like everyone else said, star counting. That's what Salleeeeee was doing when he made a similar statement.

Exactly. I have little doubt that anyone saying that has done much other that look up the last few years of recruiting rankings in order to form his/her conclusion. I'll give them that we should start to see what Freeze's superstar class can really do this year, but I don't see how anyone could watch last year's Egg Bowl and come to the conclusion that either team has vastly superior talent on the roster.

So the guy from College Football Matrix who is professing to crunch the numbers like never before and give a new, more in-depth look than ever before is essentially doing what every other "leet analyst" does and looking at recruiting rankings. I've no doubt that recruiting rankings matter...for the top 5 classes (teams average 6 five stars and 10 4 stars EVERY year) but anything lower than that it's really a crap shoot.

Do they have a couple of individuals that may be slightly better players at their position than ours, probably so. Tunsil, Treadwell, and Conner could get a nod there, but at every position group we are much deeper. We also have our share of stars that are waiting to bust out this year.

The only position group on the field I would be tempted to trade is safety, and I'm not convinced that would be worth it.

People lose sight at how ungodly political those rankings can be at times. Recruiting rankings and access to your program are usually quid pro quo.

They look at top end talent, just like they do when judging conferences. And to judge that, they look at ratings. That's it, riddle solved.

Ole Miss may or may not have more top end or overall talent, but it doesn't matter. I don't personally think they do, but we will find out soon. The only fact here is that the talent is very similar, just like most things between the two schools. The ratings favor them by a small margin, the results typically favor us by a small edge.

Not to mention,

that when you get around 15-25ish, you're talking about the difference in one or two players, per class...who may or may not even be at that school anymore.

I wonder if there are any UM fans that would admit that they'd take Dak over Bo? I know you wouldn't find a State fan to wish the opposite.
