Croom did some good while he was here. Weren't many problems with the team when he left. He didn't win, but he had the team prepared for the next guy. Kind of like when Rockey left.

1. How do you give anyone a 2-year extension for winning a 17ing Liberty Bowl after 3 years of utter garbage? 1 year? Ok, but two should have never been given.
2. In addition to the extension, his salary was nearly doubled. I get that his previous salary was uncompetitive in the SEC, but guess what... Croom was uncompetitive in the SEC as well and demand has to be taken into account too. No one was trying to pull Croom away from us so the huge hike in salary makes no sense.
3. The buyout is atrocious if that $3.5M figure is correct. From what I just read about Mullen, his is $1.4M in his new deal... Good lord

I seem to remember us giving him a huge increase. I don't agree with it either time. Your first two points are stretches. Your third point is correct, but it's important to note that this is our Athletic Department screwing up, not the fault of Coach Croom.

That aside, I don't get the vitriol toward Coach Croom. We've definitely had worse coaches and worse times. Playing the blame game for the first ten years of the the 21st century is complicated as far as MSU football is concerned. Probably better to just be glad that it's over.

and there are several other key differences. For one, Mullen didn't go through 3 years of terrible seasons before finally making a bowl season. Yeah, he started with a completely different situation than Croom and that shouldn't be ignored, but the fact remains that he hasn't a single awful season. Croom had 3 in a row and eventually 4 total after he had allegedly "turned the corner". Next, Mullen's big pay increase was linked to a solid season and Gator Bowl thrashing of Michigan, not a narrow Liberty Bowl victory over UCF. Again, I'm not saying that Croom didn't deserve anything. I'm just saying that a 2-year extension in addition to a huge raise was a bit much. The buyout clause was just icing on the cake.

The fact is that Sherrill left Crooms some talent (5-6 guys went on to the NFL)- but Crooms needed to change the culture of the program and the discipline. And while Croom improved discipline somewhat, he still left alot to be desired. The man preached constantly about hard work- yet we were still fat and out of shape under him and his S&C program.

Mullen and Balis have come in and shown how things are supposed to be. Look at Dixon- 1st thing they made him do was lose 20 pounds.

Crooms improved discipline and recruited a few defensive players- but he didnt know how to coach effectively enough to win. Plus, he was a hardheaded fool.

Tell the world you are going to line-up and run right at LSU? Even if you only get 6 inches, you say you will continue to do it?- you are a fool
Tell the world you will retire before switching to the Spread Offense- and you lead one of the worst offenses in the country? you are a fool
Tell your fanbase you dont give a **** about them? you are a fool

He did some good things for State: When he wasn't badmouthing the universtiy or throwing players under the bus, he was a good representative for the school. He hired Ellis Johnson. He was a warm body when during a time where we were going to struggle with anybody other than a great coach.

But when you look at the bad:

(1) Badmouthing the university. Badmouthing may be a little strong for when he was here; it was more that he stressed the negatives. But when he left, any decent person would have had nothing but good things to say about the university. We put up with his **** show for 5 years with a one year break provided by Ellis Johnson, give him a huge chunk of money for doing a ****** job, and then he turns around and complains about not having enough time???

(2) In order, Crooms' loyalty was to: (1st) McCorvey and Cheeeeeese; (2nd) himself; (3rd) Barnfields; (4th) the Bear (5th) the university of Alabama, (6th) his golf cart; and then his players and teams came in at a distant 7th and 8th, at best. That grates on people.

I wouldn't waste anytime hating him, but I certainly don't think you can say anything good about him that you wouldn't have been able to say about any other hire a decent AD would have made at that time. Although i guess you could say with Lonnie Tinkles making the hire, we probably could have done worse.

We've put a goodly number of players in the NFL the last three years. All but Ballard were recruited by Croom. I'll give Dan credit for holding on to Cox, McPhee and White but they were all initially recruited by Croom. Next year we'll put Boyd and Banks in the NFL, two more that first committed to Croom.

Ridicule me all you want. Croom left the program better than he found it, despite his failings as an actual coach.

Honest question. Are you legally blind? Or were you 6 years old when Croom got the job? Seriously. MSU football was "better" under Croom. As opposed to what, the 1950s? It was a chore to sit in the stands and watch that atrocious offense being run year after year with absolutely no adjustments.

the early 60's and I will say the hiring of Croom defintely is the worst damn decision EVER made. And I agree with theRabbi...the factthat LT isallowed to hang around and have the privileges that he still does is enough to make my blood boil. croom knew that he was untouchable when he was hired because of the undertones surrounding his hiring. due to that, he was an arrogant prick who turned his nose up to any and every bit of advice he was given on how to run a successful program in the SEC. from the day he set foot on campus, things were going to be done his way whether it was smart or not because he knew he had our little ol' university by the balls. the five years we let him hang around were horrible and he was destined to fail because of his stubbornness and lack of care for any opinion other than his own.

the 07 season was an absolute aberration and anyone with half a brain can see that.

It wasn't spotting good assistants, as McCorvey and Cheese outweigh Ellis johnson.
Wasn't recruiting. He had one good class out of 5? And that's if you give him full credit for the class Mullen signed (which he obviously does deserve a lot of credit for)
He corrected some of the character problems, but I don't think his teams were above average for SEC teams as far as character.

All I can come up with is he was a pretty decent speaker, and he handled the whole being the first black head coach in the SEC the right way.

Any other "bright spots" I can think of are at best areas of mediocrity in an otherwise unblemished sea of ****

Why do you consider Croom to have been a very decent man? I ask this because I've heard probably thousands of people say the exact same thing over the years, and I honestly don't know what they have all witnessed that I haven't.

What I do know is that Croom had a stubbornness in him that had no end. He put personal friendships ahead of the welfare of the team he was coaching and the school that was writing his checks. He saw no importance or value in the fans which happen to be the very people who allowed him to get paid very well, doing what he loved to do. And finally, he threw 20-year-old kids under the bus more times than I can remember rather than ever taking any blame himself or giving any of it to his coaches. I cannot recall one player showing any public remorse when Croom was shown the door.

I don't know Croom personally so deep down, he may be a decent guy. But I have never been able to figure out why so many people on the outside have labeled him a good man. I almost believe that it's nothing more than a natural reaction due to the fact that he pretty much sucked at everything else.

You can't preface a sarcastic question with "honest question". It's confusing. To answer your question I was neither 6 not legally blind. I was 19 and mildly nearsighted. Luckily, through the miracle of contact lenses, I was able to watch in person JWS's last year. It was quite possibly the worst thing I ever saw. It was terrible football and a terrible culture. It looked like neither the players nor coaches cared.

Once again, I'm not saying Croom even did a good job. But he inherited a REALLY ****** situation, and improved ever so slightly. Sure JWS had some great years... But man, he left the program in shambles.
The vitriol for Croom is a huge overreaction.... As much as you guys love to sit around and circle jerk over JWS, he deserves some blame.

in a relaxed setting to really understand. The guy has a great personality and is one of the funnier people you'd ever meet.

While at State, he treated lower level employees very well. He was extremely respectful toward faculty and staff - he demanded the same of his players. Anyone that was around Jackie's last two teams and then Croom's teams knows exactly what I'm talking about.

The Croom that you're referring to, the one that was critical of players or fans, was the guy that just couldn't handle the spotlight. He never thought out how things would sound before he said them. He cared deeply for his players, probably too much. That limited his effectiveness. It also made him say things he regretted when he was disappointed in them.

Mullen is demanding and doesn't care who likes him. He wants results. Croom cared about everybody's feelings at the expense of results. Croom is probably at his best when he's the assistant that players confide in like a father figure. Successful hard *** head coaches need those kind of guys around. It's hard to be a successful HC if you try to be that guy.

Let's remember that this is Mississippi. If you criticize the first African-American coach in SEC history, you will be labeled a racist, even if the criticism is justified. Therefore, anyone wanting to criticize his offense or his team usually started it off with, "He's a great man of character, but ..........". That is to soften the effect of being accused of racism.
