I want West to get a shot if healthy and it's legal. Gosh, this kid deserves a break . . . . and not the kind of breaks he's had.

red, I think given the date of the Bowl games, sometimes a kid is eligible to play, without the loss of a year of eligibility.

Maybe I'm confusing it, but Mister Cobble played lots in the January 2011 Birmingham Bowl, becoming eligible without the loss of a season late in the year of 2010, after the end of the regular season.

cobble was sitting for academics, since the semester ended he was eligible. Good to hear from you again Mr Hack!

You could be right but if the kid hasn't played all year if wouldn't chance a reinjury unless in the playoff

Stoops addressed West Mon. Said he was hoping for him to practice in bowl prep but had sustained a minor setback, tendonitis I think. Will be ready come spring.

An injury has to be season ending for one to even potentially be eligible for a medical hardship waiver if that is what you are getting at.

Hasn't West already redshirted prior to this season? If so, are we hoping to get a 6th year of eligibility for him down the road? If not, then I don't see the hesitation in playing him.

Redshirts do not come off before bowls. Stoops recently said West is not practicing yet. West used his redshirt in 2014.

Since West has missed two years to injury, he would be eligible to petition for a 6th year to complete four if it comes to that.

If you are red shirting and you play in a bowl, you would exhaust one year of your eligibility.

West doesn't seem to be ready for practice or a game. If he was ready IMO you put him through all the practices on 2nd or third string just to get him back up to game speed. I would not play him in the bowl. Allow for more time to heal and condition before going into spring practice next year. Baptism by fire isn't the best strategy when dealing with an injury prone player.

Stoops has said West will not be practicing nor participating in the bowl game. Minor set back with tendonitis.

Strictly rules speaking;

A player can redshirt for a season and still be eligible to play in the Bowl game without losing that redshirt. Reason being the NCAA counts the Bowl game as a Spring semester game. Redshirts have played in bowl games and not lost that redshirt for the season before at UK and again when I played at Tulsa. Transfers who have to sit out the season are also eligible to play in the bowl game, they just have to sit out 2 semesters, so if they transfered to your school in the spring then that will count as 1 semester and then the following fall semester (during the football regular season) would be the 2nd semester. The bowl games are the spring semester which would make the 3rd semester so the transfer would be eligible, I've also seen this happen.

With all of that said, a medical redshirt is different. You have to meet certian qualifications to gain a medical redshirt and its also retro active, meaning they grant it after your regular eligibility is up. Not sure the NCAA would allow them to play in the bowl game if they are trying to get that medical redshirt.

I thought West was a Freshman last year? If I am not mistaken he played quite a bit. I think he was a true sophmore before injuring himself. He will be a Sophmore in 2016/17

Pretty sure if you play in a bowl game you just burned your redshirt. Care to share that rule you mention.

Was speaking from experience. At Tulsa when we played in the Liberty Bowl we played a sophomore who was redshirting. It didn't burn his redshirt, he still played 3 more seasons after that. I have no clue what the rules say, just know what I experienced. What I stated about the rules is what we were told on why the player was able to play and not lose eligibility.

West was a red shirt Freshman last year, playing in 10 games in 2015. He will be a red shirt Junior next fall but could be eligible for a 6th year to play four in 2019.

I strongly believe, based upon my limited knowledge of the history of Medical Redshirts, that West will be granted that opportunity.

Maybe he gets a little professional/graduate school in before the draft in June of '20.

I'm guessing your memory of the facts and details is incorrect. If you play you lose the redshirt.

Stoops has already brought this up. He won't be ready for any practice because of a couple of little setbacks. It's not bad, they just don't want him to take any chances at this point.

You play in a bowl and you lose your redshirt - has always been the rule. Above poster just wrong. NCAA considers a season as one per school year and not semester by semester - that's ridiculously erroneous.
